Back of house - render, cladding, tiles?

Hello everyone,

After some helpful floorplan advice last week, I would love some help on materials. We are extending to the back and down the side of our house. The extension that falls in front of the garden fence will be white render, but I would love some ideas on what to do at the back.

Love the idea of timber cladding or tiles but don’t think it goes with our tiled dormer. We will also change both sets of doors on the ground floor, any design ideas here would be great.

I would stick with the white render at the back as well just for continuities sake. Simple palettes of materials are always the most effective. That said I do think maybe black crittall style doors would look great. It would also mark it as the new part. Fabco do some great ones.

Such great advice, Isla. We can show you some similar projects we worked on where we installed Crittall or aluminium doors - in our experience, it made such a positive difference to how the place looked and was used.

OK - so have been playing around a little with the sketches and come up with the below - the dormer on the side actually has to have a high level window (for neighbours privacy) so i think the pitched option may be feasible, which would allow us to emulate the cladding on the main gable end. I just need to talk to the builder about how much and the architect as to whether will need (yet another!) planning app to cover it? One other point - the roof is to be grey slate, am imagining that the dormer side would look best with something different from either the cedar wood or slates... it also set back c. 5m from the front of the house, so won't be as stark as the below.. maybe render that white along with the remainder of the downstairs?

We went for it - the photo is a little further up the feed before we had the drive done and painted the hanging tiles to match. We get lots of comments from passers by that they love it but i'd still love to get it rendered so they really pop rather that it be so dark.

Stop making me blush ;-) I like the more taupe ones too. They go better with the colour of your roof, I think. And I really like the Iron Grey one. Victoria's house looks beautiful! And just because I had your house open in Photoshop anyway, I've also tried Cobblestone.

Personally i'd say, if you're going to such lengths with a new garage, extension possibly the porch etc, which is a lot. I would render the whole front of the house and garage to tie the whole project together. However, you can't see much of the brick of the garage on the front, just the piers. Looking closely at them, I think the garage brick was slightly different to the main house and wonder if it was already an addition? Also, if you look at the bricks above the line of where the garage has come down, the top bricks are a different colour to the bottom. So 1, 2 & 3 are all different colour bricks. 1 and 2 are very similar, but to me there is a subtle difference as 1 doesn't contain any darker bricks and is very slightly brighter red.
