Mould spores and door frames

We've just found blackish mould settled on the top of doors, and wood of horizontal stairs, radiators, and even skirting boards nearly all throughout our house.
It's been a creeping problem... I wasn't sure what was dust and what was mould for a while, but no mistaking it now.
We have a big old 30s house that we've been battling musty old smells in ever since we bought it a few years ago. We knew there was some mould in the basement and musty smells around and tried a few solutions over the years with some success. (Heater +ventilation in the basement to start, rebuilt attict area). We open windows religiously and I run a hepa filter as I've been nervous my kids have allergies immune stuff going on). Smells got better and I could not see anything. Experts checked external walls, all OK they said. No big black spots visible.
Smells remain somewhat despite constant aeration...its not a well ventilated house.
But a recent roof insulation coupled with winter and working from home, laundry, heat, i noticed the musty smells were bad again and now see the black stuff everywhere. Horrified. Am washing and will run dehumidifiers asap
But I think the mould dust is between every slat of all wooden floors throughout the whole house.
I'm wondering if I will ever solve this.
We had planned a renovation to sort the basement and back or house where we know there's issues but if it's systemic in the air everywhere, which I see it now on the top of every single door frame all throughout the house...then what's to do?
Gut the place? Sell?
Any advice? Thank you.

You can get a mould testing kit online to work out if the black stuff you have found is likely to be of concern- my first thought was that if it’s on top of the door frames it’s dirt.

If it is mould most likely the cause is leaky pipes or a damp basement so you your plan should be to continue your renovation. You could also check gutters for leaks and invest in a better extractor fan for the bathroom.

Hi Kerrul, I'd definitely go for a more traditional door - and timber is enormously durable and secure! The last image you've shown is not (as far as I'm aware) a traditional 1920's style door - the proportions were generally in thirds; with a top sold panel of timber or glass of 1/3rd, and the bottom section of 2/3rds often in linear panels. However, if it is just a storm porch before getting to the main front door, then perhaps all of it could be glazed, with a central glazed French door, and allow clear sight lines to your original timer front door? I'm going to be different and say no! Well it's your choice really, all my internal doors are left natural antique pine with ceramic white knobs and chunky black locks because that's how they came with the old house, Houzzers have told me to paint mine in previous discussions but refuse! ;) I personally like them!

Even though I am a fan of oak doors and I like how they look in most cases, in this case, it would be a bit excessive. They would not match the general atmosphere in the house that is so light and even a little Victorian. You may try and install some small 1930s internal doors made of oak and see for yourself. It might work if you choose the correct color. I would paint it too creamy white, so it does not stand out much. It’s up to you, and you must decide what you like the most. You can find many pictures on the Internet and apply them to your house to see what it will look like.

Thanks all for your comments! And sorry Sonia but the island is full of pastel coloured houses, would make me feel a bit nauseous to come home to one every day (assuming we ever go out again). Husband has vetoed anything darker so Downpipe will probably stay, but like the idea of painting the external sashes the same. The more minimal the better, from our POV. In other news our proposed plywood floors are reportedly the first on the island, so we'll be making a statement if nothing else!

Cheers. We definitely have a problem in the basement. It's not just top of door frames but top of all panels within doors, and all skirting boards and on radiators and every surface you can think of. All windows. Even some new things we put in only 2 months ago it's settled on. Its definitely spores and lots of them. It needs a challenging scrub to get off. I've realised I washed and treated most of it, but found these this morning.....in different rooms. These are not nearly as bad tho
