Sliding doors or French doors

I moved into this 100 year old semi in November and have updated electrics, added/moved radiators,replaced all windows and front door. In the dining end of the kitchen there are upvc glazed doors -only one with a handle - that I’m going to remove and fit in the garden outbuilding/garage to replace a single door that has seen better days.
My question is what do you think about installing sliding patio doors in the dining room? How secure are these nowadays I remember there being an issue where the doors could be easily lifted out?
I have a small courtyard garden I look onto the outbuilding bounded on one side by an ugly block and rendered raised bed and the other side is part wall and part double gates for vehicle access.( I’ve only used it once for my van as I have residents parking outside my house at the front so I’m thinking of removing the gates and continuing the wall.
By replacing French doors with sliding doors I’ll gain space in the garden it’s the security issue that is my main concern.

French doors are lovely, especially in a period home, but they do need space to open out into the garden. I had that dilemma too as my lower patio is quite small and French doors would have hit the garden furniture outside. I decided on sliders and I’m glad I did. They are our back door! They are very secure and the locking mechanism locks in 6 places so would be impossible to lift out. Of course a burglar could smash the glass to get in but that would create a hell of a racket. My sliders are 6 ft wide.

I’m not so sure about removing your access gates, even with a resident permit. People do love off road parking so a bonus when or if you ever sell the house.

I agree with Sonia on sliders and gate. Aluminium frames and double/triple glazed would be even more secure.

Can you see through the gates?

Hi, we're currently having a 4.5m wide Orangery built. If I could have afforded it I probably would have gone for bi-fold doors. As they were out of my price range I looked at sliding doors and French doors that open flat with 2 glass floor to ceiling panels either side. I went for the French doors as the sliding doors actually had less space when open. In my opinion there are some great looking sliding doors for larger spaces but the ones I saw didn't look great, Have you got any pics? The groove at the bottom of he sliding doors also put me off, a haven for dirt that you just can't quite ever get out.

We built an extension on our last house (3 storey 1850's victorian town house). Most of the new back wall was a bifolding sliding oak door. We were happy with them and they looked good but we rarely had them open all the way. For this reason we have decided not to have them again in our new house. This time we are opting for 3 sets of french doors similar to the house in the picture above. There are some advantages over the folding sliding doors. It allows the wall space to be used in between each set of doors. It looks nicer in my opinion and you could curtain the 3 sets of doors if you wish. There was no point putting curtains on a folding sliding door because you would end up with a whole wall of fabric which wouldn't look great so we lost our privacy. By the way our new house is a ugly 1955 build. We are trying to make it look traditional with an exterior makeover.

Personally no Georgian bars on the doors, but its personal preference. If its just the doors and no windows in the dining area it should look fine, and will have a complete clear view out?

The first pic shows the double gates and you can just see a gap that I’ve tried to hide with spare bricks and bamboo. Behind the gates is the lane I drive down to access the gates. There is also an access gate for bins etc to the left of the double gates and there is another access gate right of the wall that goes down the side of my house to the front garden. I also have gates on the front garden another pic to follow
