Restoration of solid maple wood kitchen doors

Can anybody offer any advice on how to restore maple wood? I don’t really want to have to paint our kitchen doors unless they can’t be restored well. Please see photos. The first two are of the worn areas and the last one is how they look at the other end of the kitchen. Cheers.

You could try a light sand and some Danish oil or osmo oil if you are looking to keep a natural finish.

If you wanted to retain the original maple then you would need to sand the existing finish off completely which is quite a lengthy task, I would use an orbital sander to do the majority and a detail sander to get into the corners then hand sand up to 240 grit ready for finishing.

Then either danish, osmo or have someone spray lacquer it in polyurethane.

If it was me I would give it a light sand and then paint over it to be honest. The majority of shaker kitchens I do now are painted and it seems to be leaning towards dark greens, dusty pinks or classic neutrals. It will also give you the opportunity to fill the handle holes and put new handles on if you want.

you can get a rubber matting for the internals of the shelves and the bases of the units , this come in large rolls that can be cut down, make sure you remove these periodically to ensure there are no scratch's under the mat's. hope that helps. try Hafele for the mats

I would say that sample two is better but only because it is a warmer toned wood. To be honest I don't think that either of them go. The laminate you have chosen is cold and contemporary where as oak is warm in tone and stereo-typically traditional. I have to agree with "Man around the house" maple or walnut would be a better match, although sticking to oak may work best. Either way, I hope you find the right floor for your kitchen!

My wife is a retired restorer. She informs me:- That the door is probably original to the house, it's from the same period in time roughly. It would be a hell of a job to get the paint off, because it's probably been painted many, many times. You'd have to get it dipped, let it dry out and then inspect the wood. It's most likely due to age to have gaps and fissures under the paint that would then have to be filled. Because of the repairs and the filler, the most obvious choice to cover them up would then to be to paint it again. It's unlikely that the door will be perfect, in which case you could have a choice of oil, stain and protect products if you wanted a natural looking door. The method above may also lead to permanent damage ie- it falling apart at the top, because the glazing bars could be being held on by the paint as the wood is thin and old. If you don't like the glass, you'd then have to factor in having it replaced by a glazier. As it's also drafty and most likely doesn't sit so well in the frame, that would need work too. You can only add wood if you're painting it. Therefore, if you're in love with the door then do it and to heck with the price, but it's a gamble. All things considered:- It would be cheaper and less risky to buy a new solid wood door and frame. You can still buy an 'old style'. You can always search Ebay and the net for old looking door furniture such as the letter box which is big enough to use.

Although the quality of the door front does influence the price so do lots of other features and so you need to decide what is most important. If it were me I would firstly want lots of drawers rather than cupboards as this means better access to the contents. I would want the appliances to be good quality and integrated and I would want a quality work surface. These things all make more difference to the price than the quality of the door front. Then I would look at the house to consider if a traditional door or something handleless suits the architecture best. Assuming the choice is traditional a panel door or in frame or features such as beading or quirks and feature units or matching end panels (so the amount of construction involved in the face of the kitchen) all influence the price more than the door material. The choice of having a smooth painted finish versus a wood grain painted finish is a personal choice. I am torn between the idea that wood grain shows where you have spent your money versus a smooth painted finish that is probably a little more fashionable now and replacing the wood grain finish. I dispute that only real wood kitchens can be repainted to ring the changes as sanding paint work is not the only way of preparing a surface to paint it. I will conceed that you don’t have to get as good a paint finish on a wood fronted kitchen as an HDF door that has no graining to hide imperfections in paint which means the best finish requires spraying.

You could also look at wood bleach to remove the staining.

I might try the wood bleach first after sanding them down. If that doesn’t work then I suppose I’ll have to get them painted. Not what I wanted to do but hey ho. Thanks all.
