floating shelves at the end of the wall? or keep it empty

The fabricator is coming Monday to install countertops and backsplash(bianco superiore). He’s going to stop the backsplash at the end of the overhang(15in) the top of the wall will be empty. I was thinking to get these floating shelves and maybe put little pots of mint, cilantro and mint? Or should i keep it empty?

Hi, It looks like you already have a dark wood feature mirror in that room so have you thought about having matching shelves in the same colour? Chunky floating ones would look nice to hold towels on etc. If you wanted to go even further, then you could have the wall built out so that the shelving was recessed into the wall with little lights above each shelf - but of course it's a lot more work & money!

I think a house plant would look great in that corner, the space is large enough for you to fit a relatively decent sized plant that has some height. Alternatively a few rows of floating shelves to display books, candles, and interesting objects would look nice.

Hi Allison Oz, assuming UK tax law applies to your situation I would say it is definitely worth looking into. It's not a situation I've come across before where you are retrospectively claiming back the VAT. However it may be that you first accumulate the evidence it was vacant for 2 years and then write to the builder requesting that he reissue the invoices and a refund. Your builder will need to adjust his VAT returns and possibly make a disclosure to HMRC. I would speak to the builder and ask him to speak to his accountant. Hi lovely space and I love the way natural light floods in. I have a couple of suggestions: 1. Two rugs not one to add warmth and colour you could then have a smaller matching rug at the end of the room that you quite rightly call an empty space. 2. Consider using a bracket to move the television onto the wall. Your plan showing the TV on the right looks good but if you used that plan then the TV would look best above the fireplace...that may be too high for comfortable viewing though. 3. A floor lamp where the plant is would give light and extra interest to that far corner especially if the plant is large enough to be placed in front or slightly to one side of the lamp. 4. At least one other lamp table and lamp beside the sofa 5. The empty area....obviously tight for space when the French doors open into the lounge but you may be able to fit either a narrow console or a larger piece of art with a narrow shelf beneath to fill that wall. Coupled with the rug you will be surprised how that will be enough to allow freedom of movement through that space and yet make the room feel whole instead of in two parts. I like your mix of furniture style which makes it easier for you to consider using sites like Freecycle or Craig's list to acquire a few extra pieces without breaking the bank. And if hubby is good aT DIY a narrow shelf will be a doddle you could also check out Houzz for ideas how to make a large piece of art to go above it too

We might suggest keeping it empty. Notice how, in this kitchen design of ours, we had the backsplash extended towards the window but we didn't add open shelves above the backsplash.

Thank you for the visual Betty! I think I’m going to have the bottom of the backsplash end at the overhang and leave the top empty! Beautiful kitchen!
