Best tips for bringing character to a new-build property?
Comments (43)To balance hard modern lines and surfaces I agree that anything that adds 'life' to the room is good i.e. anything colourful, organic, or that reflects individual character. So I would go with some wooden items and/ or a wooden floor, plants to bring life, colourful or interesting textures in the soft furnishings. You don't have to go all out with colourful furniture. You can use cushions and rugs for this and the best thing is they can be changed fairly easily if you fancy a new look at a later stage. Original artwork (painting or sculpture) or interesting lamps are great if you can afford. Photos and books (!) bring personality and show that real people do live here. My rule of thumb is that you don't want your home to look like a showhouse. You want it to have life and to reflect your personality. You don't have to go all crazy cat-lady with loads of kooky clutter but a few elements to break up the monotony will really help. Stellahome, your house looks lovely btw! I also love the idea of using interesting or asymmetrical bookcases. You could get a carpenter to knock up something interesting or better yet, do it yourself if you have the skills....See MorePeriod property bay windows-curtains dilemma-blinds? patterned? plain?
Comments (1)I think going for a plain look would really enhance the classic style. I hope the images below help. Patterns will make the area too busy....See MoreBathroom with peach suite - colour scheme to update please?
Comments (26)Toria - are you able to take some more recent photos that show a little more of the room? Your last post mentions mixing a colour for below the picture rail, but I can’t see a picture rail in the photo. Can I also ask a delicate question - I’ve read your post several times and appreciate the emotional ties, but what is the purpose of this makeover? Is this a house that you personally live in and will remain in, or are you preparing to put it on the market? The outcome of that question could result in different suggestions! If you intend to remain in the house, go with whatever makes you happy. Sadly, if the aim is to get it into a sellable condition, buyers are likely to want as neutral as possible because the reality is that they may very well rip it out and start again. For what it’s worth, I think your blue tones are not quite muted enough - they are all quite bright. I’m also not sure about having the peachy colours with the blue colours, one above the other separated by a picture rail or dado rail. You might be better sticking to just one colour throughout - especially as you have a coloured suite plus the tiles. Any more than that could look very busy (unless it’s a huge bathroom!!)....See MorePicture rail in a new build? Period features v modern?
Comments (25)Likely going to come down to your personal preference. We brought a 70’s mid terrace, standard height rooms (IMO) and they had put up picture rails. Personally I wouldn’t have done but for the way we have recently decorated it, it actually adds height to the room, which I think is down to a trick of the eye, so they have grown on me. Just keep in mind if you put them up you may struggle to get them off if you change your mind down the line without having the risk of needing to replaster....See More- 3 months ago
