Bannister ideas

Hi all - looking for your thoughts on what we should do for our new bannister.
I've attached an image of the current space and ideas of the new bannisters.
Option 1 - replace with new oak and softwood bannister (£800)
Option 2 - replace with bespoke bookcase bannister (£1900)

Can I ask why you’re replacing the current bannister? I like it, I think it looks open and airy. I also like option 1 but it looks heavy and bulky. The bookcase, option 2 looks too big for the space and a bit dated in my opinion. You may have a lot of books to store but I can imagine those compartments will collect dust big time.

We’re awaiting delivery of our new banister, it’ll be oak with glazed panels in place of the spindles. Delivery due later this week then we just need to get it fitted! Of your options, I prefer the first one.

Probably a bit late on updating this but I thought I'd lost some photos of the end results. I think pretty much everything has changed since those original photos. The staircase has been painted white. It took a few coats of Zinsser BIN and a few coats of acrylic primer undercoat, with sanding between coats. Gaps between the labelling were caulked and I fitted some trim over the rough sloping section before the top coats. The stringer was completely stripped and then filled as best we can - due to lead paint fears we couldn't just rub it all down. All woodwork was finished with Little Greene intelligent eggshell in Loft White. The walls are Little Greene Intellgent Emulsion in Slaked Lime. It's a very warm white/neutral. It looked plain white when it was first painted but the white skirting transformed it. It also wipes very nicely. We had the walls replastered before painting. The tiled floor in the hallway was ripped out. We now have decent quality laminate throughout the hall and living room. Quick Step Soft Oak Natural. Carpet was fitted and supplied by the same person who did the laminate flooring, a very good local fitter. We only recently got the stairs and landing carpeted as we were waiting for our other refurbishment projects to be finished. Before it was carpeted we also had a local carpenter repair the stairs which were very creaky and the wonder treads very loose. The underside was removed so it could be properly repaired underneath. I took the stupid box catch off the door which didn't work properly and fitted a nice handle and magnetic catches. We have new engineered oak internal doors downstairs which I bought online. All it really needs now is some finishing touches like some photos or pictures on the wall of the stairwell. I'm very happy with the end result.

Just thought I’d update now the job is finished. I went for a mid grey in the end. It seemed to have browner tones when I used the tester pot on the brown rails. Never mind, it still looks much more modern and the carpet is fairly worn so won’t last forever. Doing two colours is hugely time consuming with all the masking involved.

Sorry, bit of a long thread but thought it’d still be clearer than starting a new one. I’ve touched on this subject before but want to present it to you again: Do you think painting these doors, of bathroom and separate toilet, in F&B’s Off Black would work? Also, would I need to paint the insides of the doors too?

It depends completely on how much light the landing receives. I like the bookcase idea but it might cut a lot of light.

We need to replace it as it's unstable/wobbly. We don't have a window in the hallway so it's quite dark in there already.

I think the open spindles would be much airier then. Do you need the storage space or could those items go somewhere else? I would paint it all white eggshell.

Have a look at Stairbox for banister parts, including glass panels etc. I can’t give a personal recommendation as we’ve yet to receive our order, but we liked what they offer and decided to go for it. At the very least, they have a useful tool for calculating what you need.

If they're wobbly why not get a carpenter to fixate/improve the corner pole? I think your current spindles are lovely.
