What to do with these beams?

My son just bought this house and is going to gut just about everything, but these beams have to stay. It is a 60"s ranch and the beams are rough sawn cedar. There is also window and door casing that is cedar, but that will be replaced. Ideas? Anyone dealt with this?

Comments (0)hi there so we have just moved into , to say the least a bit of a project ! half the house is very old and made of cob.. the two downstairs rooms that will be the play room and our grow up snug both have beams.. we think they are covering very old rotton ones as have drilled a bit and had a peak and it doesn't look good.. in one room the beams are painted black and in the other lilac ! yuk! any suggestions on what to do with them welcome.. excuse the state of the place .. we r going to probably go for earthborn kissing gate and paw print (the greys in the lilac beam room but the darker one in the snug )...See Morewhat colour to paint beam in large living area
Comments (11)I wouldn’t paint it the same colour as the steel. You are right, it would be too much. If you look at the room from the windows, the horizontal lines are the colour of your walls and the vertical lines are black/anthracite. To keep the balance, I would paint the beam the same colour as the walls. Otherwise you will have a grid effect which will detract from your beautiful plywood ceiling. Comments (10)Such a lovely room, but the cupboards and beams are so dark and light sapping, although I’m saying what you already know! You could paint the beams in a lighter shade like a taupe or even white along with the ceiling. I know you don’t want to paint the two units, but they would look lovely in white, cream, a soft green or taupe. Furniture has been painted for hundreds of years and certainly isn’t a new thing. The beams can be sand-blasted to their natural wood colour and I saw George Clarke do that on his programme last week, but it’s dusty work! That room has so much potential.
