You should always do a watered down mist coat on new plaster. We used the dulux trade matte diamond paint from a dulux mixing centre. Whilst it is brilliant for being able to wipe stuff off it I would say it had more of a sheen to it then I wanted so wouldn't recommend for ceilings. We used the trade dulux supermatte and that really lived up to its reputation, covers well and looks completely flat but won't wipe off so well but given its cheap and effective you can just touch up where needed.

If they are Oak veneer then read the label that came attached as they tend to say not to use certain products as it can lead to delamination when it soaks in (breaks down the glue i think). I believe wax and oils are a no no. Best to check with suppliers of the doors and the product you are thinking of using. I have used osmo polyx raw without any delamination issues though, but you apply it very liberally anyway so not much product soaks into the laminate.

Hi tgross39 Is there any reason why you said that painted wooden doors would not look good? Some simple pine doors will be inexpensive, then you can just paint them. Either ask you decorator to paint them or if budget is really tight then you could paint them yourself. This will look great with a wood floor. Alternatively you can consider the mdf veneer option but just make sure you see one in person first to check the quality is acceptable. Regarding the wooden floor, an oiled (matt) finish is usually more popular over lacquered (shiny) but it's personal preference. An oiled finish will need re-oiling every so often and can be more susceptible to marks and stains. A lacquer is more durable but can be prone to scratches. My advice would be to get down to a showroom and start looking at some to see what you're drawn to. Start with what you know you like (wood with character and knots, wide boards) to help narrow it down. Buy one pack and lay it out on the floor to see how it looks as a larger sample too. Any solid wood doors will shrink and expand with the moisture content in the house. Oak does not expand and contract as much as pine as the grain is tighter. I agree with the veneered doors, not so good. Just make sure you get a good carpenter to fit them as it's the fit that counts with regards sound proofing. Obviously a veneered door is lighter than it's denser solid wood counterpart, therefore the solid wood, would offer better sound defence, but unless they were Fire doors, i doubt you'd notice the negligible difference.
