Eco-House North Somerset

This house in open countryside is located in North Somerset near Winscombe. The site is a steeply levelled slope within the Mendip hills. The brief was to create a level access home all on one level. The house has 3 bedrooms a large open plan kitchen, living and dining space. The living space has roll back windows that connect the interior to the external terrace space. The central terrace area has an outdoor room with external fireplace and projected eaves to keep off inclement weather.

The structure is timber frame over a concrete block foundation. The timber frame is clad externally with local stone. The roof is clad in zinc with a large projecting eaves. The gardens are stepped in levels away from the house so that the steep slope can be enjoyed. The upper parts of the slope provide extensive views over the Mendip hills.
The planning officer gave consent to the application based on the exemplary design. Project carried on whilst working at rra. Completed by 2019 by Thomas Studio. The house is heated by air source heat pump and the heating is supplied with underfloor heating. The house was fitted with a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system although this was unnecessary given the house is designed for passive ventilation due to stack effect. The home is controlled by smart technology so that lighting, sound and electrical gadgets are all centrally controlled by controller and over smart devices.
