How to Houzz: How to Find Photos to Help You Plan Your Project
Want to find those perfect photos to help you to bring your ideas to life? Here's how
Refine your search
- You can then use the tabs at the top, choosing the location you’d like to search, the style and more. You can also further refine the selection by selecting your colour again, this will tighten the search further still.
- If you’d like to refine the search to just one room, experiment with typing in the general search term, eg: ‘colourful rug’ and then using the filters on the left to narrow it down, rather than typing ‘living room colourful rugs’ into the search box. Each option will throw up slightly different results.
- The search box is best for when you’re looking for something a little more specific – pink sofas, bamboo pendant lights, pink and mint (as in the colour combination), terrazzo and so on, since these terms won’t appear in the left-hand pre-set search column.
- Looking at this image, for example, you might have been searching for ‘space-saving headboards’, ‘multi-functional beds’, ‘MDF headboard’ or ‘bookshelf bed’. You get the idea.
Tip: A good thing to think about when looking for something specific is some of the keywords that might have been used when the photos were tagged, or labelled, as they were uploaded onto Houzz.

3. Search our editorial stories for handpicked photos.
- If you’d rather someone else had made a head start for you, or you’re also looking for advice on a topic, type in your search term as before, say ‘wallpaper’ but hit ‘stories’ in the dropdown.
- This way you’ll see all the different articles published on one topic, for instance ‘wallpaper’, and in each story you’ll find around 10 carefully selected images with tips to boot.
How do I save photos I like?
Simply hit the green ‘Save’ button – this will give you an option to save to one of your existing Ideabooks or to create a new one. Give it a name relevant to your project, such as ‘Bedroom Ideas’ or ‘Nice Colour Combinations’.

Tip: You don’t need to click into and enlarge each photo in order to save it. As you browse images just hit the save button, as pointed out by the red arrow above, and add them to your ideabooks.

1. Simply type what you’re looking for in the search box (see next photo), and choose ‘photos’ in the drop-down options that’ll appear.
Alternatively, you can start your search in the column on the left rather than the search box itself.
