How to Create a Tailored Nautical Bedroom Look
If you want a coastal feel in your bedroom, but you’re thinking more Hamptons than Hove, take a peek at these nautical but nice ideas
Bedrooms are the perfect place for escapism. In this more secluded part of the house, you can break the natural flow of your home and do something that really just appeals to you. I’m going to focus on the bed linen, and look at how a combination of crisp whites and deep blues can instantly gives you that feeling of coastal-inspired Hamptons elegance – without leaving the country.
Pile on the pillows
You just couldn’t get your pillows any plumper than these! The crisp white bedding with its contrasting piping makes the bed the star of the show in this monochrome room. If you aren’t a lover of bed throws, then a simple runner along the bed can have a similar effect while looking that little bit more finished.
The black Designers Guild wallpaper, with its glossy circles on a matt background, gives another nod to the sea with its echoes of ship portholes. The gloss reflects light from the window on the other side of the room, giving an extra lift to this scheme.

Match bedding with wall colour
The sheer scale of this elegant bedroom really gives it a wow factor. But it can be hard to keep a large room looking coherent. Here, the way in which the colour of the cushions, bed throw and valance all tie in with the wall colour really pulls the look together neatly. The nautical colours are subtle in here – inky blue and cream rather than navy and white – giving it a sophisticated feel.
The bench at the end of the bed is both aesthetically pleasing and practical. As well as being a place to perch, it’s the perfect spot to put all those scatter cushions at bedtime.

Keep it simple
This bold look is perfect for a teenager’s bedroom. It’s fun how the pendant lampshade matches the bold horizontal stripes of the bed linen and really anchors (sorry!) the scheme. The overall look of the room is simple enough that it can take such a statement.

Add a touch of tan
This is the essence of nautical design: crisp white walls combined with a bold navy stripe. The tan scatter cushions at the front work so well with navy and white, and the addition gives the colour scheme added depth and makes it feel less contrived.
I really like seeing the duvet piled at the bottom of the bed and I think the wide lines of the design make this look luxurious rather than just unmade!

Soften the look with floral patterns
Although this scheme doesn’t immediately say ‘nautical’, it has that light, fresh touch you want in a coastal theme. The bergere bed is such a lovely tan tone, which works beautifully with the navy blues in the wallpaper. This coastal look would be a perfect fit in a more traditional property. The bed is made very simply, with a pretty floral cushion at the back to tie the bed in with the wallpaper.

Combine fabrics and textures
This bed is made up with such a lovely combination of fabrics and textures in more stormy coastal shades – pale blues and light greys with whites and taupes. I love the ethnic design on the front cushions and the really soft-looking throw. The dark architrave of the door ties in perfectly with the large navy cushion on the bed, and the overall combination of colours and textures throughout is a lovely example of a really well thought through design.

Exaggerate features you love
With massive pillows, masses of cushions and pinstripes on the wallpaper, this bedroom combines all the elements of a classic nautical look in a quirky way.
This is definitely for someone who enjoys mountains of cushions. The large pillows at the back are the perfect foundation for the scatter cushions in the foreground, which really exaggerate the size of the big bed. Scatter cushions are also a perfect opportunity to add lots of different designs and fabrics that you love without having them dominate the scheme.

Use stars and stripes
This cheerfully nautical scheme shows you don’t need to go for a really crisp contrast of blue and white to get that nautical feel: taupe tones can also work really well, bringing warmth to a space.
The room has a playful feel, with the starry throw on the bed stopping the scheme from feeling too grown-up. Although there are lots of colour and pattern combinations here, the restricted palette means they all sit well together. The taupe tone of the bedding matches the walls and gives it extra coherence.

The coastal feel is one of the simplest transformations you can give a bedroom. Here, you can see the impact the combination of white and navy brings. You don’t get much more nautical than an All Aboard cushion, and the triple piping on the crisp white bedding adds luxurious detail. The room is simple but bold, and really is a classic nautical look. The layers of pattern and texture add to the decadence and make the clean colour scheme feel less minimal.
