If I were to explain the atmosphere in this home, I’d say it’s happy. Natural light, unbelievable view of Lake Murray, the mountains, the green hills, the sky – I used those natural colors as inspiration to come up with a palette for this project. As a result, we were brave enough to go with 3 cabinet colors (natural, oyster and olive), a gorgeous blue granite that’s named Azurite (a very powerful crystal), new appliance layout, raised ceiling, and a hole in the wall (butler’s window) … quite a lot, considering that client’s original goal was to just reface the existing cabinets (see before photos). This remodel turned out to be the most accurate representation of my clients, their way of life and what they wanted to highlight in a space so dear to them. You truly feel like you’re in an English countryside cottage with stellar views, quaint vibe and accessories suitable for any modern family. We love the final result and can’t get enough of that warm abundant light!

We always enjoy creating a customized kitchen that is specifically tailored to our client’s needs and wishes. In this particular case, the client requested a blue coloured island. We were beyond thrilled for the opportunity to introduce a splash of colour in a bold way. This kitchen has a 13’ long island which houses a wine fridge, cabinetry storage and offers seating for 8 people! It’s the main link that connects the other 3 walls to each other. This kitchen is all about repetition of curvature within as many details as possible, from the custom light fixtures to the backsplash, to even the hardware that has a subtle concave profile. The clean geometry is softened with the introduction of organic patterns in the oak hardwood floor, quartz countertop and Kravat fabric in the window treatments.

This kitchen was very 1980s and the homeowners were ready for a change. As amateur chefs, they had a lot of requests and appliances to accommodate but we were up for the challenge. Taking the kitchen back down to the studs, we began to open up their kitchen while providing them plenty of storage to conceal their bulk storage and many small appliances. Replacing their existing refrigerator with a panel-ready column refrigerator and freezer, helped keep the sleek look of the cabinets without being disrupted by appliances. The vacuum sealer drawer is an integrated part as well, hidden by the matching cabinet drawer front. Even the beverage cooler has a door that matches the cabinetry of the island. The stainless, professional-grade gas range stands out amongst the white cabinets and its brass touches match the cabinet hardware, faucet, pot-filler, and veining through the quartzite. The show-stopper of this kitchen is this amazing book-matched quartzite with its deep blues and brass veining and this incredible sink that was created out of it as well, to continue the continuity of this kitchen. The enormous island is covered with the same stone but with the dark wood, it provides a dramatic flair. The mercury glass pendants, do not distract but complete the look. Should I include a kitchen island?

Kitchen island ideas are abundant these days; it seems most kitchen designs include a kitchen island, if not multiple islands. However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. Exposed shelving and storage is also popular for eclectic, Scandi and industrial-inspired looks, so you could opt for glass-fronted cabinets or no wall-mounted cabinets at all. Whilst a large kitchen pantry is the dream of most homeowners, it can’t always be a reality. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
