Open architecture with exposed beams and wood ceiling create a natural indoor/outdoor ambiance in this midcentury remodel. The original driftwood tree that the stairs wind around makes a bold statement and gives this house a true indoor/outdoor style.

After being vacant for years, this property needed extensive repairs and system updates to accommodate the young family who would be making it their home. The existing mid-century modern architecture drove the design, and finding ways to open up the floorplan towards the sweeping views of the boulevard was a priority. Custom white oak cabinetry was created for several spaces, and new architectural details were added throughout the interior. Now brought back to its former glory, this home is a fun, modern, sun-lit place to be. To see the "before" images, visit our website. Interior Design by Tyler Karu. Architecture by Kevin Browne. The large open-riser stair is located at the heart of the home and helps separate the private living areas from more public reception spaces. It's capped by a large 4'x4' skylight that washed light deep into the central parts of the home. Floor-level LED courtesy lighting provides ambience at night.

Think of an umbrella. The metal spines start at a central point and flare outwards towards a stiffened fabric edge. At that taut outer edge sit the faceted walls of glass. The metal umbrella spines are the mammoth steel beams seen in the photos supporting the house and radiate back to a central point. That central point is a curved steel and glass staircase stretched like a long slinky up through all three floors and wraps around a cylindrical teak elevator.

The staircase serves as a light well with four large skylight at the top. It brings natural light to the inner recesses of the house and, on warm days, can be opened to crease a stacked ventilation effect: Hot air move outwards through the openings above and draws cool air in from the shaded back garden. http://www.houzz.com/pro/kuohphotography/thomas-kuoh-photography
