Native Edge LandscapeThis stylish Brentwood home had recently been renovated while preserving the integrity of its original mid-century design, and architecture. With furniture and furnishings true to the stylish time period, this was a perfect yard to imitate the aesthetics of the infamous Brazilian Landscape Architect, Burle Marx. This family needed a fun, yet functional space to host friends and family; but wanted to preserve the timeless aesthetics of the stylish Mid-Century flare. Burle Marx is famous for his organic nature within modernist landscape architecture. We pulled inspiration from Marx, as one of the first people to call for the conservation of Brazil’s rainforests, to introduce a palette of native and beneficial plant materials to mimic his environmental efforts. We also pulled from his artistic expressions with our curved and dramatic garden bed lines, and placement of specimen plantings. All in all, we created a truly timeless landscape design, that’s style will easily convey generation to generation.

Studio KZ- ArchitectureThis fence was constructed to provide safety, security, and curb appeal to the exposed front yard of this family home situated on busy Lincoln Drive in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The fence was designed as a modular panel system utilizing solid panels parallel to the road to block traffic noise. The solid panels weave between large palo verde trees and landscaping, and are supported by welded steel mesh sections that double as trellises for bougainvillea. The landscape lighting illuminates the undersides of the tree canopies in front of dark fence panels, while smaller plants are presented as textural silhouettes before a light washed wall.

The project included 5 tons of dirt removal, drip irrigation, decomposed granite, over 100 plants, two toned stained concrete, red sand, mulch, decorative rocks.

We worked diligently to match our stonework to both the home’s exterior and the existing retaining wall. First, we installed low retaining barriers around the side garden and the two prominent trees in the front yard. In the garden by the porch, we mulched and left the existing plants as they were.
Inside our limestone barrier around the trees, we placed two types of river rock, giving it a swimming pond look. Then we placed decorative stones around and in the new structure. Both mulch and stones provide the added benefit of water retention during the dry months.

Urbanscapes LLCThe clients courtyard was designed to work around the majestic live oak tree and its massive canopy. The fence is edged with Alphonse Karr Bamboo, and the elliptical bed at the foot of the tree showcase a mass planting of wood ferns. The courtyard houses an elongated ipe deck with floating wood and metal stairs. The ipe skirting offers an untraditional, but dynamic and distinct look.
