Designing an Alpine Hideaway Landscaped Garden in Aston Clinton
A secluded courtyard garden, alpine planting, slate stone walls and relaxing terrace… a private party garden. More than 20 tonnes of construction materials were needed, managed and expertly constructed in this creative landscaped environment.
Brief
A courtyard garden that had been left for many years, was very much in need of a re-design.
The planting and natural stone terrace had to be updated, reworked and transformed into a new garden.
The abundance of alpine trees and succulent planting was something that had to be enhanced. The entertaining terrace needed redesigning, it was essential that the new materials spoke the same language as the existing weathered landscape.
Design
The open terraced area that cried out for a reclaimed looking terrace. The surrounding raised area is complimented with the tactile nature and appearance of this weathered looking composite decking, although we prefer natural materials it was a perfect match.
Millboard Weathered decking does have the look and feel of a reclaimed and very old looking plank of real wood. The colour, Vintage, is a perfect match for this project.
A floating bench arrangement perfectly constructed in amongst the alpine Tier stone cladding surrounded by the planting. A satisfying place to sit amongst the overwhelming planting.
Imported from Germany, a planting companion to the scheme was the Pinus Mugo tree. Bare stemmed and look stunning when illuminated in the evening.

A new, colorful perennial bed balances the patio. A mix of 'Summer Beauty' allium, 'Purpurkerze' astilbe, 'The Rocket' ligularia, and 'Elegans' hosta add multi-season interest and color.

The brief was to provide a low maintenance garden with an Oriental theme.
The untidy grassed area was cleared and a contemporary slate stone used to create a patio large enough to accommodate a dining table. Other areas were covered with gravel and pebbles of varying sizes with oriental style planting such as grasses and low growing dwarf pines.
The couple also wanted a summerhouse and this was sighted on a raised hardwood deck which was mirrored on the opposite side of the garden complete with a pergola and containers planted with tall bamboo for added privacy and interest.

This garden was an all lawn front yard with a straight path to the front door and a driveway. The new garden is water-wise, colorful, and has a very low need for maintenance. Beautiful paving materials, artful arbors, large boulders, and very drought-tolerant plants come together to delight the owners with their beauty, setting a serene and relaxing mood and inviting them onto their front porch.

A magical new garden was key to our client’s ambitious renovation plans for this exceptional house in East Sussex. Set in grounds of just over one acre – the once featureless garden simply fell away from the house with little to connect the two or draw you outside. A new circular driveway now sweeps around the ancient oak tree to a cool, scented white garden that is both structured and romantic. Concentric rings of yew hedging divide borders brimming with early scented narcissi, alliums, foxgloves, campanula, anemone and more.
The palette explodes in the rear garden as mown paths cut through swathes of wildflowers down to the lake sized pond lined with bulrushes and swirling with goldfish and dragonflies. A water feature Mark designed for the RHS Tatton Park garden show is replicated here at the client’s request and is the central feature of the bamboo garden that now links the front and rear gardens.
The fallen oak tree that once lay in the front garden is now to be enjoyed in the sunken seating area and pond-side benches. Regular visits to this garden have allowed us to collaborate in the continued development and nurture of one of our very favourite gardens.
