Based in Heriot in the Scottish Borders, Sally Ruel established her practice in June 1996. She is well versed in managing the complexities of the building process, guiding clients through the maze of issues associated with getting a project built. She can help at all stages of a project, from early conceptual designs to planning and building warrant applications, and with detailed and interior design as well as managing construction through to completion. Her aim is to make a creative analysis of clients requirements, with discussions at an early stage to establish cost, programming and design objectives, with the aim of creating buildings that are appropriate to their purpose, sensitive to their context and have a low impact on the environment.

Charlie Sutherland and Charlie Hussey studied together at the Mackintosh School of Architecture before going on to both work for the late Sir James Stirling. After six years working for Stirling, Charlie Hussey spent a brief period in Italy working for Renzo Piano. During this time Charlie Sutherland took on the role of associate at Michael Wilford and Partners where he was responsible for the new British Embassy in Berlin and the Lowry Centre in Salford. Colin Harris joined the practice after it was established in the late nineties having worked for Zaha Hadid in London and Marchese Partners in Sydney and became the third director in 2005. David McKenna joined the practice in 2005 and became a director in 2013. Current projects reflect an ethos of diversity rather than specialisation. Our approach to all projects is to start from first principles, addressing each design problem objectively. It is believed that through omission of preconceived ideas the process will always throw new light on the creative potential of the programme and site. The studio has an informal and open atmosphere which enables extensive input from all team members, consultants and clients.

Blackhouse Architecture has experience in the residential sector, from small extensions to one-off bespoke houses, masterplanning, commercial, education and health. Blackhouse adopt historical architectural traditions with modern solutions - be it with materials, scale, geometry and proportion - to add visual interest. A minimal, pared-down approach is our preferred option to create and realise simple yet elegant buildings.

Our lives are not generic so why are our buildings? Buildings should be designed to suit the way we occupy and use them. We believe that by asking our clients questions, and challenging preconceptions, we can create inspiring architecture designed with you and for you. The common presumption is that employing an architect is expensive, stressful and can be a once in a lifetime project. At Woodside Parker Kirk, we believe that we can create spaces which respond and adapt to your demands and within your budget. Using our expertise, we will reduce risks and make exciting architecture available to you. Our blog and case studies guide you through projects from start to finish, as well as all the challenges met along the way. We break the process down into stages, and the decisions made are explained in order to understand the end result. Obtaining consents from the council can provide a challenge, however, if they are approached and consulted as early as possible, a successful solution can be achieved. Download our case study articles for explaining each step of the process. Our Pinterest page is full of inspiring images. It is a great tool for visualising, sharing and discussing ideas with our clients. Instagram allows us to share an insight into the office and our outlook on architecture. On Twitter, we discuss and promote self build architecture within the wider community, in Scotland and abroad. You can follow, like, and interact with us on a variety of social media platforms. We promote our client focused service and our approach to design. Our service is to provide a creative solution which answers your questions and the challenges are met. Great architecture is our passion and we believe everyone should live, work, and enjoy spaces which suit their lifestyle.

Architectural consultancy based in The Borders and Highlands with over 25 years’ experience in architecture. Matt Hamlett BSc, BArch I have over 30 years experience in architecture, working both as a designer and a senior technical specialist. In this time I have worked on a variety of projects ranging from shopping malls, atrium office developments, flatted residential developments, mansion house conversions, listed buildings, steading conversions, attic conversions, to private houses and extensions. For the last few years I have run my own business, and have been able to pursue my work in a far more rewarding manner, dealing directly with clients, building relationships, offering a bespoke design service, tailor made to each individual client. In my experience, successful design is a matter of collaboration. It involves the client, the builder and the architect all working together, and begins with listening to the client’s needs. Meeting people to discuss their aspirations, developing a design, and working as part of a team to deliver a building, can be exceptionally rewarding. Domestic buildings are where we spend the most time. Whether designing a house, refurbishing an old one, or converting one, you are affecting people’s lives.
