Malcolm McLeman has worked with three Edinburgh architectural practices since qualifying in 1984. In 2001 he formed his own design practice and since then has concentrated on residential projects at the upper end of the market. He has also undertaken restaurant, hotel, town planning, and other commercial projects. His work is today concentrated in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders where he is based. The practice is supplemented by additional design input from specialists depending on the complexity/nature of any particular project. These range from interior designers to town planning consultants. Malcolm's client base consists largely of repeat clients dating back twenty years, although new clients are welcome to the extent that workload permits.

"We shape our buildings and then they shape us." Commissioning a new building is an act of profound optimism – for those that do so, often the most significant undertaking of their lives. We work regularly with clients for whom building is a once in a lifetime event, we have self built ourselves (both individually and as part of a collective group) and we understand both the joys and the tribulations that accompany that commitment. Ultimately we judge the quality of our work on the sense of delight promoted by our buildings in the people that use them. We try to work with a quiet reverence for the materials with which we build, the place where we build and the planet on which we build in a way that reflects the optimism and passion of the people that commission us. John set up John Kinsley Architects in May 2016. Our first major project, a Collective Custom Build residential scheme in Portobello, Edinburgh is currently on site.

Andrew and Jane Burridge's careers began in respected London practices before relocating to Edinburgh in the mid 90s. Andrew then established his own studio and in the early days designed a series of exquisitely detailed small projects. He has a natural affinity with materials and this interest in detail is brought to all projects regardless of scale. Jane set up Bennetts Associates Edinburgh office and for 11 years worked on large scale commercial, education and hotel projects before joining Andrew in 2006 to form a+j burridge. Their belief in the value of good design is the reason they are architects. Whilst intelligent design can optimise the operation of an organisation, beautiful design can uplift and give pleasure to all the building users. In April 2012 a+j burridge merged with Sinclair Hay Sutherland to form SHS BURRIDGE Architects. The range of projects SHS BURRIDGE Architects are involved in is very diverse including education, healthcare, office and restaurant interiors, residential, special needs and agriculture projects. We enjoy working with clients long term so we make sure we understand their objectives and help them to fulfil these as smoothly as possible. As a small practice, the partners are directly involved in the running of projects.

Based in Heriot in the Scottish Borders, Sally Ruel established her practice in June 1996. She is well versed in managing the complexities of the building process, guiding clients through the maze of issues associated with getting a project built. She can help at all stages of a project, from early conceptual designs to planning and building warrant applications, and with detailed and interior design as well as managing construction through to completion. Her aim is to make a creative analysis of clients requirements, with discussions at an early stage to establish cost, programming and design objectives, with the aim of creating buildings that are appropriate to their purpose, sensitive to their context and have a low impact on the environment.

Architectural consultancy based in The Borders and Highlands with over 25 years’ experience in architecture. Matt Hamlett BSc, BArch I have over 30 years experience in architecture, working both as a designer and a senior technical specialist. In this time I have worked on a variety of projects ranging from shopping malls, atrium office developments, flatted residential developments, mansion house conversions, listed buildings, steading conversions, attic conversions, to private houses and extensions. For the last few years I have run my own business, and have been able to pursue my work in a far more rewarding manner, dealing directly with clients, building relationships, offering a bespoke design service, tailor made to each individual client. In my experience, successful design is a matter of collaboration. It involves the client, the builder and the architect all working together, and begins with listening to the client’s needs. Meeting people to discuss their aspirations, developing a design, and working as part of a team to deliver a building, can be exceptionally rewarding. Domestic buildings are where we spend the most time. Whether designing a house, refurbishing an old one, or converting one, you are affecting people’s lives.

Following his graduation from Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in Aberdeen, Roy worked for practices in both Edinburgh and Glasgow between the years 2000 and 2006. During this time he was to qualify as an architect and attain his registration. A move to Sydney, Australia in 2006 was to present him with the opportunity to involve himself with the design and delivery of a variety of projects for some award-winning practices. He returned to Scotland with the intention of starting a small practice that would blend considerable experience and principled design with a philosophy that was dedicated to the aims and aspirations of the client. Roy Montgomery Architecture was established in 2012.
