Making Wood Work

Making Wood Work have now done significant work on two houses, radically different in age and style. The first job was a complex, bespoke set of french doors and the second an oak set of fitted bookshelves and an ash set. MWW delivered on quality price and reliability. Communication and capacity to really listen to our needs was impressive.

Making Wood Work undertook to make a home office desk. I wanted an L-shaped type oak desk which I could not find in any UK outlets. Having discussed ideas with Making Wood Work a design was made. The finished desk is absolutely fantastic - it is exactly what I envisaged, fits in the room perfectly and the workmanship is superb.

Julian has done several pieces of work for us – two coffee tables, fitted wardrobes and recreation of a pair of Georgian doors. The tables were to his original, modernist design, in specially sourced burled oak and black walnut. The wardrobes and doors were of painted tulip wood, fitted with marvellous precision into an awkward space and an archway, respectively. I cannot praise Julian's work too highly. This is not carpentry, it is craftsmanship and design of the highest calibre.

I contacted Julian at Making Wood Work having seen an advertisement. I was so glad I did! From the outset Julian took a professional and creative approach to our project. He has a calm, down to earth approach. His knowledge showed time and again, both in design and build work. We were looking for a bespoke, sizeable low cabinet, running the length of one wall for storage purposes and a bookcase filling another wall of our sitting room. Julian advised us comprehensively, taking into account the wider environment of the room. He brought samples of wood, which helped the design come alive, showed us a whole range of pictures of earlier work, which gave us further ideas and ran through the whole design to ensure we were satisfied going ahead. I am particular about quality and the interior dynamics of a room. I had high expectations about what this furniture would look like. Julian exceeded these expectations. He has produced two pieces of work which have transformed our sitting room. The wood and the creations he has made with the wood are exceptional. My husband and I carefully considered the quote for the work, but honestly, what we arrived at was worth every penny in terms of the satisfaction we derive every time we walk into that room. Julian kept in contact with us throughout the project and always managed our expectations around timescales. We needed a new kitchen and gave the design, manufacturer, and installation to Julian. He has a creative flair coupled with a practical skillset allowing him to create a truly bespoke, unique, beautiful and practical kitchen. His recommendation of materials, positioning, flow, lighting, work surfaces, appliances, cupboards, space and colours were easy to agree with. I recently moved into a small flat in South London and needed to transform the tiny nursery room into a bedroom for myself and all of my clothes. Julian crafted a bed that could store all of my clothes without the need for a wardrobe, a wall-mounted bedside table and bespoke alcove shelving. He was adaptable and flexible and always happy to tweak designs to ensure that the aesthetic was right. A first class carpentry service. We've now had six pieces of beautiful furniture made for us by Julian and he has done two other woodworking jobs for us. We've been commissioning him for the past six years or more. He is always our No 1 choice for carpentry.

finely designed and made book shelves with adjustable shelving and cupboards. Julian also painted the plain wallpaper which would be behind the book shelves and connected the under shelve lighting. a nicely done job-he took time to discuss design options and time to fit both items properly as the walls and ceilings etc were not exactly straight. he also did a similar job at another property for me. while more expensive than mass produced cupboards and book shelves, seems much better quality to me.

A compact cottage kitchen designed and built at very short notice. Was impressed at the creative thinking to maximise preparation and storage space. Excellent quality of finish and great recommendations on sourcing appliances to keep within budget.
