Outdoor Area Dilemma - NEED ADVICE!!

We desperately want to prepare our back-outdoor area for summer so we can entertain there,BUT, the weeds can’t be brought under control and we’re out of ideas on how to get it to look beautiful so we’re comfortable entertaining friends there. Has to be DIY as labour where we live is through the roof expensive.

What we would LOVE is outdoor tiles but we can’t see ourselves laying them (way above our comfort zone!). We just cannot get the weeds under control here.

Can anyone please please give some advice what we can do to make it look prettier?

You could try boiling water and salt on the weeds. I’m told it’s effective, and eco-friendly too. Alternatively, a bit ”out of the box” how about sewing something like chamomile between the slabs to make a deliberate greening which will look pretty and smell nice too? And I’d suggest when entertains friends outdoors it doesn’t need to be too pristine, it is outdoors after all. The company and the food should be the highlights wherever you are.

You could try a mix of vinegar and salt and spray it on. To be honest you will never fully control weeds. Many weed seeds are airborne like dandelions and they seed themselves in any nook and cranny. There are weedkillers you can spray on them but they will still come back. Someone suggested a flame weed gun that blasts them so worth a look? Or just get a much bigger rug.

Brian, I strongly suspect any solution similar to those in the photos you have supplied will be extremely expensive. As you have mentioned, you have already had one company provide a price which was at a price you envisaged. Unfortunately, a designer solution such as this is rarely scalable in terms of size, the fact that you are mobilising a designer, fitter etc. will carry a substantial price from the outset. The previous suggestions offered by professionals on this site suggested by B&Q and Ikea are clearly at a different price point, but nonetheless a solution to the dilemma you presented.

Hi Heidi, Having just done such a project (and learnt a little from it...): Ceiling heights: minimum thickness of a floor is around 200mm/8" but some of that can be "reclaimed" below e.g. by leaving the joists exposed. Above is trickier because insulation requirements for the roof mean you can't really do that much there; the distance between the outer surface of the roof ridge and the inner ceiling will end up at least 250mm. Do your figures. Regarding the steelwork, there are lots of technical options to build this and "all of them may be right" as in (not) needing a ridge steel beam. Have you got an SE (structural engineer) spec for it? You can talk directly to steelworks fabricators about this. Builders tend to buy RSJs from specialist companies whose business it is to "sell steel made to size / spec" - steelworks fabricators. Some builders like to "cut&weld on site" because it saves them time but workshop welding and steel preparation tends to have more consistent quality and is preferred by structural engineers and/or insurance & building control (the latter often because of the fire risk for welding work on small sites). So this may be a case for more questions to the builder ("who's your steel fabricator and would you mind me talking to them?"), or a 2nd opinion by showing the plans to a fabricator and asking them for how they think this could/should best be built. The technical term is to request a "method statement" - how will the steelwork be made to conform to design, comply with structural spec & building regs and/or constraints of property deeds, and how will it be installed (to satisfy site insurance and Health& Safety regs, and/or other provisions e.g. from party wall awards/consents) ?" On the fire suppression system: building regs part B (fire safety, https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/485420/BR_PDF_AD_B1_2013.pdf ) extensively talk about "means of escape" which usually are protected / made "safe" by the additional fire resistance hallway walls and fire-rated doors to the hallway/stairwell provide. Where you have open-plan, the guidance says (quote): "Alternatively, it may be possible to provide sprinkler protection to the open-plan area, [ ... long sequence of auxiliary requirements/explanations ... ]" And the devil is in the detail. Not the least because "sprinkler" isn't the same as "mist sprinkler" (let's not go there now, rabbit hole...). It's definitely worth pre-clearing the design / fire suppression method with building control, because once you start, having to "alter" later to put extra partitions in not only blows costs out but also kills the design. From my own experience - do not let the builder "just start" because ... they may hold _you_ to ransom if their (hidden) cost-saving provisions are felled by external agents/influences. With no roof on the building and neighbours breathing down your neck for potential damage or perceived risk, or building control refusing signoff unless major changes, you're in a pretty bad negotiation position. Building regs will pre-clear designs for you, possibly for a small fee. Good luck !

Hi Helen, I think you should consider adding a splash of colour to your neutrals. Maybe something warm and natural, keeping with the theme. I think mustard yellow, sage or greenery would go very well with the colours you've gone for and the stag cushion :) or if you want to go funky, why don't you go for bold geometric cushions:

Chris, We have the same shower tray as you (but in the 150cm format) and also exactly the same issue. I think it's a design fault as the tray is too shallow and the ridge round the edge does not contain the water. Our highly untechnical solution has been to buy shower mats which are exactly 80cm wide (from Christy on their website) and then to accept that they will get soaked and to dry them on the heated towel rail. Sorry if this is not the most sophisticated solution but it works for us. Good luck

Had another look at your paving and there doesn’t seem to be any grouting between the slabs. You could try filling the gaps with an epoxy resin grout (just brushes in) which then sets and it will prevent future weeds for a good couple of years. Obviously you will need to remove the current weeds first.

To remove the weeds you can use a trick used by ground staff at the All England Club. Drive a very big nail into the bottom of a broom handle then drag the nail between the slabs. The weeds will be easily removed.

Have you considered stencilling the slabs with a tile design. I have seen it done very effectively and with designs very similar to your outdoor rug. You could just do the area around your table, jet wash slabs, follow advice re weeds, get some tubs of plants and flowers for interest and some outdoor lights and you are good to go!
