Is it okay to have different window styles?

Were replacing windows and adding a dormer. its a 1925 bungalow. ive attached a picture of the architect plans for the dormer and plan to put timber casement windows with cross upper astragals in downstairs dormers. My 2 questions are:

1. What to do with the dormer windows? One big centre window or match downstairs, astragals or not? The window height upstairs will be 1350mm and are 1800 mm downstairs.

2. Can i do the cottage style windows for rooms at side and back like in picture 3 or would this be a bit too mismatched? The bedroom, kitchen windows etc are 1500 mm high.

As the windows upstairs on the same elevation are much shallower I would keep them in the same style for consistency i.e. colour and glass but omit as much detail as possible. The window is not deep enough for the same level of detail as the ground floor. I have had traditional sash windows at the front of an edwardian house and grey aluminium ultra slim profile ones in a new extension. Your architect should be the best person to advise you on what style is most aesthetically pleasing. Decide if you want to modernise or stick with the 1925's style.

We opted for crossed astragals in the upper frames of our wooden sash windows in our bedroom, largely to match with our neighbour’s house. It looks great, but is a real pain on those mornings when there is condensation on the windows. It takes ages to get it off with so many corners! We’ve not got them elsewhere and on subsequent window replacements have gone with plain top and bottom. I agree the dormer window won’t look right matched to downstairs, it can’t suggest an alternative.

Hi @Jerry Evans thanks for the thoughtful reply - all right on target. We bought the house with the newly installed windows, so the contract was with the previous owners - not us. Would be nice if Crittall would honour their guarantee or even offer any help but they've yet to do the decent thing. They will not toss their installer under the bus for mis-selling them, nor will they obviously go on record saying they're not suitable for a marine/coastal environment. We're happy to be their test lab!. With respect to condensation the thermal break question is a good one - thanks. If there is one it's not visible and seems woefully ineffective. We have trickle ventilation for the house as a whole but it doesn't reach the windows unfortunately. We do have all the usual extractors and we're starting to look at further air circulation/ventilation solutions. Cheers Bill

It will have a dark blue black shaker kitchen with suspended chimney extractor on cables and wood effect floor. I’ve seen industrial style kitchens with both crittall and wider bifolds and they both look nice. I would go with bifolds for the cost now because we have a max budget to spent on the house to ever get our money back (it’s not that we can’t afford to do what we want as such but you don’t want to throw money away!) even though I love the Crittall BUT it’s the practical side that we can’t agree on now

Maybe it's time to ditch the crossed astragals altogether for the new windows. You will get more light with larger panes too. It would be easier to clean and maintain. I wouldn't worry about matching the neighbours unless you are in a conservation area or the house is listed.

Thanks, what do you think about having different windows in the rest of the house like the picture with the cottage style windows? im thinking they might match as they would have astragals but different configuration.

I don't think its a problem at all. I could imagine the two styles with and without astragals co-existing quite happly. We have had quite a few houses with different window styles in different rooms and it's never bothered me. We have also never struggled to sell them on either.

For your dormer windows, I'd suggest sticking with the timber casement and cross-upper astragals like downstairs to keep the look unified. You might simplify the design a bit upstairs due to different window sizes, but maintaining a consistent style will tie the whole house together beautifully. As for the cottage-style windows on the sides and back, go for it! Keeping the same window style throughout your 1925 bungalow will preserve its character
