Decorating a student's room (rental)

This is my main room in my flat: http://imgur.com/a/8p6U4#0

As you can see there are hardly any plants and no pictures or other decorative items at all in my room. I didn't have any back at my parents' home but I would like to change that. I think first I want to get a tall plant to put on the right of the TV furniture. Maybe a small one on my working table and even on the nightstand? And another one on top of my shelf on the left of the TV?

I am trying to get some colours into the room, as you can see I wanted the sleeping corner to be blue. I don't want to force it too much but I want some sort of clear theme. In the living area however, I'd prefer a warmer colour. At my parents' home the living room was filled with red and orange and I don't really want to continue that way. I was thinking about natural green or maybe some sort of brown? I don't really have a theme in the living area yet - and by the way the beanbag is not mine, so it won't be there anymore soon. I also have a western guitar and electric guitars which I could put in open space or hang on the wall - but I'd prefer not to due to the flat being rather humid.

Any suggestions for a picture on the wall above the monitors or above the TV? Or maybe even above the bed? Or what would you suggest for those walls?

Last but not least, what about lamps? I only have the one on my nightstand, then there are two at the ceiling which were already there when I moved in. You can see one of them in the first picture on imgur, the second one looks exactly the same but is located above where I was standing to take the first panorama, i.e. somewhat between couch and bed.

Wow, student digs have changed since my uni days! Plants always liven up a space and make it healthier too, so it's a great idea to have some in your home.

Are you allowed to paint? If not you're on the right lines in your sleeping area, choosing a few coordinating items to develop a colour scheme.

My rooms have each started with one item I love - a painting, a cushion, anything really. Then I've picked a colour from it to take the theme onwards. For example, in my lounge I have a collection of antique bird prints, some of which have a pastel green in them, and the fireplace has exposed pinkish brickwork. The walls are painted a slightly stronger shade of green, my sofa and chairs are a deep green velvet, and I've selected cushions with a similar pastel green and pinkish colours in the design to link with the prints and the brickwork. While nothing matches, it all harmonises. While that is a far cry from your taste, the idea might give you a starting point. It might sound complicated, but it really isn't - just start with one thing you love and it will grow from there. Perhaps a trip to an art shop for a great picture might give you a burst of inspiration.

Hi. I must admit the carpet looks fine in the photo but if it's grotty I would just get one rug. I'd go for something in a beigey colour as white will make the space feel smaller. Can you move the sofa away from the curtains just even a couple of inches? The throw is lovely but perhaps try it folded over the arm? I might also add a couple of lighter cushions, either something with the moss green or the bronze that's in the cushion. I'd also accessorise the coffee table ( include flowers or a plant for some greenery) and add art or a mirror over the sofa if allowed. Do you have a photo of the existing light?

Hi Minnie, Thanks so much for your comments and links; all very helpful and absolutely to my taste. Right now I am playing around with layouts (see photos) and I think the current set up may be the best, although not ideal. You are right that my hopes for a three seater or l-shaped sofa are slim as I can't find a way to work it out. I really liked the dinning room table you suggested, but I think it could be too big? Also we're totally on the same page re sheepskin rugs and benches as i've got my eye on some. What do you think of this current layout? I could fit the TV to the right of the door, but given the TV unit depth (which looks to be standard) do you think it would be too much of a intrusion as you walk into the room? Also it could fit on the chest (potentially too high) but the sofa would then need to be by the window and I find that slightly too far away. Thanks again!

I have noticed that lots of small town stations were built with highly decorative features such as brickwork, colonnades, and canopy’s which have fallen into disrepair or been removed (often in the 1960s). Often the priority is now practical considerations such as parking provision which means often there is no landscaping or decoration that would be the norm of other public buildings. Also they were built before cars were available so driving in and parking is often haphazard. They often seem to be foreboding places at night too. Of course there are examples were none of these things are true such as Kings Cross. So if I were a resident near a railway station I would hope that any plans increased investment on the site- perhaps bringing in other businesses such as hotels, bars and restaurants to improve the ambiance especially at night- I can think of stations where there are attached but underused buildings that could be connected which in turn could generate increased rail use in the quieter evening which in turn would help improve profitability and eventually rail fares. It occurs to me that if the objective is to also improve local pride then perhaps there should be some civic areas to draw in children (such as rooms that can be used for the Cubs, the Guides the sea cadets etc). Getting children involved with something has been shown to discourage antisocial behaviour towards the area in their later adolescence. Assuming there is room it might even be possible to have a prayer room and build associations with local religious community’s who in turn may be able to offer support for homeless people who also find themselves at stations. Perhaps there are lessons to be learned from Airports and hospitals in this regard. Given that these are often city centre sites the road traffic would also need to be considered for pedestrians safety- one solution might be to have public transport in one area and private cars in another with traffic lights or roundabouts planned to safely let traffic on to the town centre roads. I would love to see available and reasonably priced parking in safe underground and multi storey car parks with dry walkways to the platforms to help make regular rail travel more affordable. From an aesthetic point of view I would love to see good quality lighting that is not too harsh. It would also be good if the site could include trees which would soften the buildings and improve noise pollution. It would be good if the platforms, conveniences and waiting rooms were cleaner and better appointed and perhaps dedicated areas for retail or advertising could help pay for these upgrades. It occurs to me that tannoy announcements are often intelligible as they try to fill the entire complex with news to supplement information that is already on display screens- perhaps the station experience would be better if these announcements were limited to certain areas such as platforms and restrooms.
