How to fill a space between columns in a kitchen?

We're taking a wall out that separates the kitchen and dining room, to turn it into a kitchen diner. Unfortunately we need to have a RSJ put in, and this means that we need to put in a supporting column on the exterior wall. Next to that column though is another column which houses a waste pipe.

There isn't enough room to put something like a hob between them as the gap is only 92cm and would leave it a bit cramped.

I've made some mock ups in sketch up where I have extended the columns out to 300mm and fitted a cupboard and some shelves.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on what we could do to best utilise this space

Move the waste pipe to the outside of the house. Small cost, should look normal, and then you're not limited in the kitchen.

Or put some reduced depth tall cupboards in front of the pipe chase, and it will disappear altogether.

Ideal spot for what the Americans call an appliance garage - ie cabinet that goes from worktop to ceiling with a pair of doors or roll front shutter, with shelving for all your gizmos - ie mixer on a roll out shelf all plugged in and ready to operate - juicer- bread bin etc - if you want to put a toaster or bread maker in there be aware of the heat - make sure when it's rolled out it's got enough clearance not to be a fire hazard !!

Thank you very much for all the advice. We have already thought about mounting the TV up but decided against it as the wall is solid and it would therefore cause a lot of mess. I think you have a few options. You could remove more of the dividing wall to help you treat the space as one big room. While at it I might put in doors to the garden and either put matching fire surrounds in both spaces or leave the front one and take out the back chimney breast. Alternately you make your existing dining room a space for your big TV. I prefer this option as I think your TV is too big for the alcove it is in and fights for attention against a fireplace that is also larger than the original. I would likely make the space you are asking about as a lounge/ dining room and use it for entertaining/ reading and put a smaller second TV in there- probably in the RH alcove. I would put your main TV in what is currently your dining room and block up the door to the kitchen which I think will make refitting the kitchen easier at a later date. Great name btw.

Yep, if it were an oven it would be fine, but radiators are the opposite of insulated! So the air circulating will be that much warmer. Where I want to put it, the back of the fridge will be on a (cold) outside wall, and the radiator on an inside wall the front of the appliance. If the heat exchange happens at the back hoping it will be okay?
