I can't help but speculate that perhaps the reason so many houses featured are London based or more high-end properties is because most of the case studies are uploaded by architecture or design professionals who employ professional photographers to show off the finished results. These services aren't cheap and I don't imagine these companies get too many requests from owners of smaller 30's - 70's era homes, especially from outside the capital, because the homeowners won't see a return on the investment. I would have thought requesting design-savvy home owners load more of their own photo's would help bridge the gap. Perhaps on the next newsletter you can ask homeowners to consider contributing any photos of spaces they are particularly proud of?

Hi. I have to agree and disagree with Jonathan on kitchen layout. Unfortunately, it is a common mistake to leave the layout as the last thing to consider. Your kitchen will be the center of your house, space between the dining area and living room. Your family and friends will spend most of the time rather around the kitchen table, chatting, having a drink, coffee, breakfast (add a lot of more) than around dining table or on the sofa. To properly establish the layout may be the most important choice you will have to make. How you cook, how you will move around the kitchen, how do you prepare meals and hundreds of more questions to be answered. Therefore the position of the fridge, what kind of extractor will you choose (island build in, ceiling extractor or maybe skylift by Faber) can be vital to rest of the works. Nicely pointed by Jonathan the position of the soil stack, another very important for layout and positioning of the sink. All those may be easily resolved if you ask for help professional designer who spends with your family couple of hours and helps you to make correct choices. I would consider having something other than downlights - either in addition to them or instead of - in the dining/living area Downlights especially LEDs can be an unforgiving light and don't provide any options. In my kitchen I have LED downlights, however, I have dimmable halogens in the dining bit, with a pair of wall lights, which make it feel warmer, cosier and more relaxing. I would have liked a pendant light fitting but the downlights were already there and we didn't want to go to the bother of redoing the ceiling. I would agree with Jonathan on under cupboard lighting - don't underestimate how much light you need in a kitchen and utility room. We have under cupboard lights and also in-cupboard lighting in the glass fronted wall cabinets. We have 18 downlights in the kitchen part (roughly 4.5m x 5.5m) of our kitchen/diner on two different switches (the diner bit is on a third switch/dimmer and wall lights on a fourth ) which proves most useful. Our utility is a separate room approx 3.5M x 3.5m and we have 6 downlights in there. Probably obvious, but don't have the downlights situated directly above the worktops/cabinets, if you have wall cupboards. Try to ensure you get full coverage of light over the room, to avoid dark patches, that can be aided by having tiltable downlights.

Although it's great to be able to support local companies, sometimes budgets don't stretch to that! (At least in our experience.) For our last three projects, we've used Howden's as they have come out at the best price. My husband is in the trade, so we can deal with them directly. October they normally have a big sale and they can offer price match for like-for-like kitchens. We have had no issues with the quality and with the deals they can be great value for money. If your neighbour can purchase directly with them, that will make life easier and you can benefit from the discounts especially during their big October sale. They also offer a design service and will work directly with you. I don't believe they charge for this design service. I personally have only had positive experiences with them, but we have always designed our kitchens using online planners and sent them over to them to price up. In the event the wrong item was sent, replacements always came quickly. Some of the stores have started their October sale early! We are just about to purchase our 4th kitchen from them. :)
