kitchen update

I want to update my cooker and hob. I saw a fantastic half moon shaped induction hob in a kitchen shop. The guy there said he bought it off the internet but couldn't tell me the make and said he cant find another. Does anyone know if I can source an induction hob that isn't boring square of oblong?

I think they're called kidney shaped induction hob. B&Q sells one in that shape, but it's a ceramic hob.

Wow, what a lot of comments. I think you have a wonderful kitchen, which has been created with much love & attention to detail. You are asking about painting things in a dark / inky colour - & your Oak unit - but you already have a mid grey wall surrounding the Oak unit - which is why it stands out - take the walls back to an off white & it will blend back in. The lighting in the entire area doesn't seem to be enough for "dark inky colours" - If you really want something like that why not create a picture of what you want on canvas & put it behind glass in the Aga alcove? Your Aga is dark already so it might just make that area a feature. Don't start taking out bits of the kitchen - once you start you will carry on & suddenly your Dad's work will be destroyed, which would be incredibly sad. Your kitchen works well for you - I do agree that the floor could be underfloor heating with tiles on the top - but weigh up the costs before you start. Lighting is everything, so more lights - ceiling not spots -LEDs as many as you can! From the photographs you provide it looks as if the room leading off from the dining area is already a darkish room, & were you to paint the oak any colour at all I think you would regret it - a slight chip there or a knock here & the paint starts to come away - wood is beautiful, it holds history and it gives such beauty - use that as your palate.. Be gentile on your kitchen - try painting paper and then bluetack it to the wall / unit /island etc. so you get an idea of what it might look like if you painted it - a great source of long paper is to be found in the wallpaper isle - you can buy a roll of lining paper for under £5, get the paint test pots & try out your ideas without damaging the beauty you already have.

It is an advice forum and asking on her behalf is thoughtful and sensible. I think it hasn't helped having so much advice on what to change when you'd started by saying that your daughter doesn't want to paint the doors, retile or change the counter tops. Not everyone reads everything it seems. In my view, it's impossible to decide until your daughter has moved in and seen how her own accessories fit or don't fit and then make a judgement. The things that bother me are the stark white walls and the colour of the floor - neither does justice to the funky black or the orangey pine. A warmer paint colour - or an interesting wallpaper - could make a huge difference. Although rugs can be a nuisance in a kitchen - they move around, are trip hazards, and can get mucky - throwing something down on top of the floor might help to give her ideas. If the owners are taking away the washing machine and dishwasher, replacing them with stainless steel would immediately tone in better or, if the doors are still made, integrating new appliances (as someone else has suggested) would also make a difference. If there were more of a match between the colours in the room ... there might well be scope for adding some teal or turquoise accessories. There's also scope for hanging a huge painting/print/poster, or several, on the wall above that radiator (the existing picture is far too small and the wrong shape - landscape would be better). Good luck to your daughter - I think she can make modest changes to the walls and floor that will turn it into a lovely kitchen.

Just had some fun with the ikea planner. In the Netherlands this AXTAD kitchen will cost €2800 without appliances, without worktop (top, sink, tap) and without lights, but with corner plateaus. Same layout as you currently have, but renewed. Not knowing yet what your window size and spacing is, it's just an idea. Moved the block wall, maybe not needed, but in this layout it gave me some space for a 60cm 'wide' dining table. I'd suggest getting plenty of quotes and save some more. At work we sell Rotpunkt, good price-quality. At home I have an ikea kitchen, because.. well.. budget. Can't compare it's quality with Rotpunkt, but it will do for the next few years and doors are quite cheap to replace. Would recommend getting a custom fitted worktop, because a stone/quartz will add instant class to any kitchen. (though laminate is fine and much cheaper)
