How do I make this large kitchen homely?
Comments (26)Hi - how I envy you that big kitchen; mine is tiny. I went for a warm cream with a splashback in bright red. You could perhaps add bright red accessories? I would go for a slightly darker, warmer shade of the walls, I would put large, bright ornaments on top of the cupboards (I particularly like hens and roosters) - they do need to be big though, otherwise they'll get lost. I'm sure you're going to have a table and chairs; my choice would be light wood, round, and maybe brightly coloured chairs to contrast the black tiles. Or, you go opt for a corner seating arrangement with comfy upholstered seating and bright cushions. Plants are an absolute must for me and that corner, to the left of the door, is crying out for a beautiful palm.....that is, if you don't opt for the corner seating! I would then place my plant(s) at, or near, the end of your counter. There are some very realistic "fake" candles around now - I have two which I've put into Moroccan style lamps which are only about 10 - 12" high. One sits of the floor, the other on a small table; they're pretty through the day and at night they flicker and cast patterns on the walls. I wish you well with whatever your choices - have fun and play around with it....See Morehow do I modernise this room on a budget
Comments (10)Hello Diana, I had another idea based on working with what you have and that is to possibly add to the carpet in the form of rugs. You could actually do the same with runners for landings or stairs too... I have included a vibrant pattern for just one example which has pink but also other colours that you could work with in order to create a more coherent finish as you bring the colour into other areas of the home. The rug idea will not only break up the pink but offer a contrast and compliment and the same time.. For the sofa and armchair. Adding a plain block colour in the form of cushions, throws with something geometric as a contrast, can again work to tone down the pattern whilst retaining it's interest.. I would not though paint the woodwork as I think it works best as it is.. Here are some inspirational images that are fantastic in the way they use the pink element. : )) Could be two tone rather than a whole wall.... Interesting wallpaper in other areas or as part of a painted scheme.. A slightly darker red or dark pink for accent... Striking textural painted walls.....See MoreHelp - Finishing a garden on a tight budget!
Comments (27)Gerty what a site! Well done on progress. You have a large site and will probably be enjoying/maintaining it for years to come so many be consider doing a gardening course through your Council’s adult education provision as they are usually cheap and a fantastic way to learn especially if you are on a tight budget. I am an avid gardener for years and a few of my lessons learnt: the mantra ‘right plant, right place’ is a mantra for a reason, a wonderful book by Roy Lancaster is an investment; many shrubs/plants hate wind so choose carefully; learn how to take cuttings; plant shrubs for their eventual height. Happy gardening!...See MorePlease can someone advise on how I can make this wall less ugly??
Comments (7)It looks like you all get the idea. There are no limits, apart from our imagination, to the configurations. I have no idea why they are called jib doors. Does anyone know? I do know from experience though that they work a treat. Many years ago I was visiting Abbotsford the home of Sir Walter Scott. I was lost in reverie taking in the contents of a lovely room when the wall moved and a woman appeared. I quite literally jumped out of my skin! She turned out to be a grand daughter of Sir Walter Scott who very kindly explained the door mechanism. I think she took secret pleasure in startling visitors!...See Morepcmom1
