need advice regarding blinds/curtains

choosing type/colour of curtains/blinds to add contemp chic to French doors overlooking garden in recep/tv rm with grey walls, black corner sofa and v light grey/white floor.
Ceiling quite low unfortunately.

If your French doors are Upvc I can recommend perfect fit blinds!!
They fit onto the door (no screws) and are framed and don't get damaged ends!!
Then curtains to finish off!!

For my first roman blind I used a roman blind kit from Dunelm, worked out great. I then used those instructions to go on to make a further 12 (never buy a house with 5 sided bay windows!) and purchased the bits needed from terrysfabrics as mentioned by Catherine Byrne. They are really straightforward. The key is to take your time with your measurements/calculations and with ensuring your edges and rod pockets are straight.

Hi Diana, Whenever I specify Roman Blinds I recess them into the window and put dress curtains on each side (not functioning, purely for show and to soften the look) The issue I have is that the failure rate on Romans is very high, the pull string mechanism is very delicate and can jam up after regular use. Given the choice I would not specify them. My preferred solution is to inset plantation shutters into each window and then dress the outside with a simple pair of dress curtains each side or a modern swag over the head. I have done this on traditional interiors and ultra modern and they always look good. I never have any ongoing issues and the light quality the blades give is wonderful. (I prefer a large blade and avoid the central pole in favour of a hidden mechanism.) Another interesting feature of plantation shutters is that in the evening you push the shutters up for privacy and this deflects the heat back into the room, it saves a lot of money !! As a professional in the industry and also have a 360cm bifold door at home i know the issue all too well. It all comes down to the budget you want to spend. I would have to recommend use a curtain track so you can get good support all the way across the track and know that it is sturdy to hold a heavyish pair of curtains. You will have to go with a metal curtain track of some description as the plastic ones are just not substantial enough and will not work as smoothly as the aluminium ones. You will certainly be able to have a single curtain pull to one side with a good quality track. Now the main element of this is the heading style for these curtains. The modern wave headings give you a beautiful pleat that will always look beautiful. Any of our metal tracks would be substantial enough and some of them can be upgraded to 60mm or 80mm wave heading. https://www.direct-fabrics.co.uk/curtain-tracks/metal Price for a 350cm would be around £40 upwards for medium domestic. going upto a heavy duty around £150 even more for silent gliss products. Fitting and installation with a qualified CSCS fitter would be around £120 maybe more depending on location. However to note you will have curtains right infront of a beautiful bifold door that will obstruct light coming in through the windows. I would suggest shaping the track outside the reveal but the book cases are in the way. Perfect Fit Blinds An alternative if you want the light to continue to come in is perfect fit blinds these work as frames that go out side the rubber seals of the window and allow a secondary frame to be mounted without any drilling into the window. This means you can fit them quickly and easily. A pleated blind would look incredible. A further option would be electric curtain tracks that fold to the left or right. These would be around £1000 Best option for cost Other options a light unlined hotel weight dimout pair of curtains these would be 95% blackout and you wouldnt see through them, with an eyelet heading top fixed inside the reveal with recess brackets. would work well. Really simple you would have 32 eyelets on a 4 width pair. not quite 100% fullness but would still look very clean. This would take up approx 16cm per side. @rinked Thanks, good idea - i'll see what it looks like later. @Suzanne C thank you for sharing your experience and pictures. We'll be going out for quotations once our planning is granted so i'll make sure i get a cost for wet UFH. I think it would be the preferred route with the warmth underfloor and extra wall space is always good in open plan extensions. @minipie Thank you. The software really is great once you get to grips with it. We've started to obtain budget costs on the roof lights and one company has offered to take us to see a few recently completed projects which should hopefully give us some inspiration and allow us to gain some feedback from previous clients. I'll aim to get at least one opening roof light after all the advice received on this board. Thank you for sharing your experience. I'll look into the small radiator in the bathroom. Good idea. The extract routes are pretty easy as the kitchen hood is on an external wall, as is the utility. The WC fan will follow the existing route above the utility rooms ceiling. Not sure on the subfloor as not taken up any flooring so far but the house was built around 2003 so you'd expect a pretty thick solid concrete slab so it might not be as easy as excavating in an older property.
