playing it safe with colours

I take huge pride in my house and ponder, I feel my living room is a bit all the same colours, i love my sofas and curtains, but feel maybe i should change the cushion covers and am hoping to get some advice

I am worried about taking the leap of using adventurous colours in case I get them wrong. I have 3 walls that are white and one feature wall which is duck egg blue, sea grass carpets but feel it’s all a bit wishy washy and safe.

Can you advise at all?

The room looks beautiful and elegant. If it was my room I would do the following (this is just on personal taste, as I say the room is lovely). I would paint the feature wall a lighter shade of duck egg to tie in with the cushions. I would paint the coffee table in either an off white or very pale chalky pink as it blends into the rug slightly at the moment. I would add a couple of the same pink cushions to the sofas. I would paint the mirror in an off white. Or you could try expanding on the silver, the table lamps a look lovely.

It's a beautiful room as it is. If you really fancy a change pastels are very much in fashion at the moment, so you could add some new cushions or accessories in other pastel shades like pinks, mauves, greens. If you're feeling a bit braver go for a deeper colour on the feature wall or add some wallpaper for a bit of pattern.

I still want to kill my DH over the guest bathroom décor. I wanted an "Italian vampire raises from its tomb" theme: large black tiles for floor and some walls, the shower and rest of the walls in these superb handmade glazed Italian mosaic tiles I found, similar to this: I had my eyes on this black high-gloss bathroom vanity, with red toilet seat - it would've been glorious!! I paid for everything, came home excited with samples and... disaster: hubby went ...red, he called his brother and mother, even my sister, as reinforcements, and started the attack! Apparently, it was 'too scary', too much Dracula or kitschy brothel like (they couldn't decide and made me wonder how do they know what a brothel bathroom looks like), too "dark and gory" and they were all "genuinely horrified", as the guests would've been (in their opinion) ... boring people.... Anyway, I went back with hubby to the bathroom shop, to find "light and classic" and, as a joke, I showed him the 'swimming pool' glass mosaic - he liked it and, as they say, the rest is history. So now we have a nice, practical and totally boring guest bathroom, that apparently doesn't horrify the guests (just me!)

@lisamarie1000 it looks like you've got quite a blank canvas to work with there but as well as giving lots of opportunities it can also be quite daunting if you don't know where to start. As a starting point I would look at where the sun falls in the garden as this can be important for growing vegetables and the greenhouse which need to be in as much sun as possible. Draw a plan to scale of the garden and use cut out shapes to represent the different areas (growing area, play area, sitting area etc.). You can place these on the plan and move them around until you get a layout that you are happy with. The size of the shapes needs to be big enough to represent what their use is. You can also base this on the dimensions of the house such as location of windows and doors. Try to avoid pushing everything to the edges as this can just draw attention to the boundaries and make the space feel small. Think about how you would move through the garden to get to the different areas. If you are going to have a path through, it will be more interesting if this isn't just a straight line down the middle. By making the route through have changes in direction you can add focal points (such as the apple tree) and make the garden seem bigger. If space is tight consider growing vegetables mixed in with ornamental plants so that the garden doesn't look like an allotment. Finally think about using screening with tall plants or trellis at various points so that you don't see the whole garden at once. This can also make the garden seem more interesting and enticing.

You have an amazing room and your idea of a double sided fireplace is awesome. I agree with colourhappy in not having a carpet but a wood floor. From the description of your taste you sound as if you like rustic and homely. A wood floor would look amazing and could be dressed with animal skin rugs or arty rugs or sheepskin - you could change the look with the seasons. You also seem to have some fab retro/mid century furniture on the far side of the room. Maybe you could change your sofa to something either retro or modern (think square - see dwell.co.uk for examples) and keep this style going. Clean modern lines would really give this room a fab look. Also, as the room is both a living room and study, could you move the dining room into this room and the study to the dining room? I think the room's identity as a living space would be more consolidated this way, if it's possible.

Hi I am struggling deciding on cladding colour and window style/colour for a new dormer. We have a bungalow with rear dormer but are adding front dormer. Walls will be rendered white and have plantation shutters. We are not sure whether to have grey windows or white but we will also use cedral cladding on the cheeks of the dormers so have a big range of colours to choose from. I'd like to use an app to take a photo of the house and play with colours is there a good one to use? Thanks

Your living room is beautiful! Only slight changes I would make would be to perhaps change the rug under the table, a larger one with a pattern and the duck egg colour from the feature wall. A lovely big plant on the table such as a cala lily would be lovely too, and add a bit of contrast.

How about some yellow/pink flowers on the coffee table just to lift the room - the pink ones in the corner brighten it up but are still very in keeping. Putting a display with yellow in on the coffee table would have bigger impact and lift the sofa behind. Gorgeous relaxing room though

Very nice room in my opinion only needs a few tweaks. I would change the frames of the pictures on the walls, add a bigger piece to the coffee table maybe big silver type bowl for a more dramatic effect. Put some coffee table books on lower section coffee table. Loose the tiebacks on the curtains (bit twee) & change the cushions to plain ones but different selection of textures. Repaint the side tables so the tops aren't brown.

If you're comfortable with the colours, then stick to it. The last thing you want to do is create a living room that you don't feel at ease in. I agree that the colours seem a bit flat, so try just adding bolder shades of your current colour scheme. We'd stain the table a darker wood colour, such as walnut to add a striking feature and play around with the furnishings. You can instantly change the feel of a room with pillows and throws, and since you already have a beautiful array of them, trying changing them slightly by adding new colours with dye. Try upholsteries (or purchasing new) table lamps to something a bit more playful and exciting. Finally, that table centrepiece is screaming for a bright bunch of flowers, like tulips!

It is a very nice room that you wouldn't change much.

I would also lose the tie backs.

Add some fresh bright flowers in the vase on the table...lidl do good cheap flowers.

I also think that the table top would look better in a darker stain but obviously you may not want to touch that.
