Help me arrange my lounge
Comments (25)The picture is a ganesh - hindu god that I bought on holiday in bangkok, I'm actually going to replace it with a sketch or simple drawing as I don't think its fits the frame well. I would LOVE to replicate the alcove cupboard, but my Dad built them for me when he stayed with me for a week once and it was hard work, I couldn't ask him to do it again! I'll have a play around with the mirror etc tonight. Green is a good suggestion, I will keep it in mind when cushion shopping :-) And I know that the shelves need some thought. Thanks again :-)...See MoreOld fire
Comments (11)It is really just a matter of removing the clutter around the grate and giving it a good cleanup. It is quite an interesting feature and will stand well on its own. I would remove all of the objects around it and clear out the grate. The modern stand of tools needs to be replaced with a simple set that matches the style of the fireplace. Not sure what the round item to the left is, but I suspect it might me a lighter of some sort. It and the jug seem to feel comfortable but the rest of the items need to be removed. As suggested above, a careful application of the appropriate blacking will do wonders, but even before that I would call in a chimney sweep to clean the flue and make sure it is in working order. Even if you do not plan to use the fireplace it is a good idea to know what the working status is. I imagine this is meant for coal burning, though I would not take my word on that. I have a gas fire with imitation coals that "burn" quite realistically. You can get them at a fireplace shop and they do indeed look like coal. You could use those if you do not plan to light them, or even use real coal to fill the grate. When I restored my fireplace and set in a coal basket I was lucky to talk to an old fellow who knew just how it should work. If you can't find good advice from a shop or chimney sweep then it would be fun to do do a little research at the library to find out how the fireplace was used and how it should look with proper accessories. I think you will be pleased with the result....See MoreHouse re-jig help!
Comments (23)The downstairs is not so hard, change the position of the W.C as already suggested and add the En-Suite to bedroom two, allowing the Master bedroom nice facilities. I'd think about connecting the Utility to the garage and making it larger. You still have access front to back on the other side of the property. I agree, removing the Chimney is not a great Job, plus it's a nice feature. Upstairs - More of a Challenge. You'd need to find out where the current soil pipe goes. You say the drains are at the front, but I'm guessing there must be drains at the rear too. It would be odd, given the position of the bathroom upstairs if the soil pipe went from where it is out the front elevation. I think it has to come out across the roof and down in the corner between the back left of the lounge and the Sun Room. Amending that is the challenge. You could put dormers front and back and possibly gain a room up there in doing so. ie, being able to use a portion of bedroom two for a landing going around the Chimeny breast. Going over the Sunroom, which would need a proper room etc. However, be mindful that dormers at the front are not permitted development and you would therefore, need planning approval. I'm no structural engineer, so this bit's on a wing and prayer and only a very rough idea, due to the lack of dimensions and location of the 'Pooh pipe'!...See MoreHelp! Comments (19)As someone mentioned, a less cluttered more simplistic TV cabinet would be a good place to start. I would not change the soft furnishings, I love the yellow, green and blue highlights and I think they help give the room a slightly retro feel. As many others in the forum have also said, a change in wall colour would really help, the idea of a soft sage green colour, similar to what Sonia has mentioned (above) would look lovely in your room, however it seems changing the wall colour is not something you wish to do right now. You have a gorgeous bay window, and replacing those net curtains with some quality roman blinds might be a good choice, I believe an off white colour or maybe a really light grey may help break up that caramel brown without adding any more bold colours to the mix. Alternatively an off white wooden venetian is also a popular choice for bay windows and would also really help enhance that room. I've put some suggestions below but you can always order blind samples to see for yourself. It's already a stylish lounge but a few minor changes could really take this room to the next level! https://www.makemyblinds.co.uk/rustic-weave-white.html https://www.makemyblinds.co.uk/rustic-weave-raincloud.html https://www.makemyblinds.co.uk/editions-ultra-pure-with-lilly-tape.html...See MoreSam Kotadia
