Hi

This is a ceiling extractor and if I'm not mistaken this particular one looks like it's a Westin Stratus model. This has then been built into a downstand construction from the ceiling.

Westin extractors can be purchased from any kitchen specialist that has an account with Westin. You could always call Westin and find out who your closest dealer is.

Hi, I'm considering a ceiling mounted extractor for an island hob. If you know, could you tell me the efficiency of this style over a wall mounted option? Thank you, Karen

Ok, so I appreciate that these two are not easy to compare. There must be a way however of testing them both fairly and get results that give the consumer an idea of comparison. "..we extract at the point the vapour is produced 100% effectively". I take it with this you mean the extraction is 100% effective and not the vapour produced is 100% effective. What does "100% effectively" mean? It seems to suggest that the cooking smells are completely emitted. This is surely disingenuous or at the least misleading.

Well we went for it and ducted it out under the floor. We've only been back in our house a few weeks but so far so good. It had really good suction and isn't too noisy! I'm glad we took the plunge. I'd far rather the smells go outside than recirculating.

As a rule of thumb, you shouldn't make the extraction any worse than what was existing when refurbishing a kitchen, but part F building regs states any new kitchen should be provided with a mechanical extract fan, so is moving the kitchen to a new part of the house considered as being a new installation or a refurbishment. As I understand it (but check with local building control), providing a kitchen or bathroom in a room where there wasn't one before, building regs approval is likely to be required to ensure the room will have adequate ventilation, drainage and meets the requirements in respect of structural stability, electrical and fire safety. You would need either a 30 litre/second extractor if its over the hob or 60 litre/second if its placed elewhere ie on an external wall to meet part F. But you may also have to consider/meet some of the other parts of the regs. as well. Be interesting to know if you do ask building control what their answer is (get it in writing from them so they can't change their mind).

Hi Karen, a ceiling extractor in general terms isn't as efficient as a standard wall mounted extractor. But if you are having the hob on an island then you really only have 3 choices on extraction. Hanging down type, ceiling or down draft. The problem is in each type there are lots of models from various manufacturers that really don't work well at all. And as each system is considerably more expensive than a standard wall extractor, making the wrong choice can be very costly.

As a kitchen designer with quite a few years experience, working in the mid to top end of the industry, we do a lot of kitchens with islands and many of these have the hob on the island. And for the last 3 or 4 years I would say our sales of ceiling extractors have virtually dried up. This is simply because of Bora cooktop extraction systems. It's a combined hob and extractor, so the extractor is 'at source' which makes it the most efficient system by far. And Bora is the only down draft system we sell. We also have Bora fully working in our showroom to demonstrate to customers exactly how it works.
