Looking for ideas to maximise space

4 bedroom possibly 5 not sure where to go. Like the idea of ensuite for as many as possible. Bath for main bedroom plus walk in shower. Bath plus shower for main bathroom

Hi - adding a very quick sketch ( as have a client meeting shortly !) something like this as a bedroom configuration could maybe work - with Jack and Jill ensuites between the four bedrooms or if budget allows four ensuite shower rooms instead ( or a combination - one J&J and two ES) but realistically you want something to suit you as a family - so need to know a bit more about you .... Possibly putting a bath in bay window of master might work - no electrics within 3m of it though !! And obviously check it could take the weight of a full bath and adult (s) too !!

The new mast bedroom is cavernous compared to the other rooms upstairs. You could split it into two bedrooms with a bathroom between and have the master bed on the other side of the house.
However if it were my house I would have the big master suite, I would adopt Oneplans idea for the big landing and the grand entrance to the main bedroom. The only difference for me would be to make the ensuite and dressing room twice as big and the bedroom will still be impressive.

It's always best to get as much prep as you can done before you dive into the work. As Jonathon suggested, it's great to think of it from every angle. Stepping back and looking at it from a distance as well as the immediate effects the changes will make. That's where interior designers can help. Ensuring the design is thought about as a whole, after all.. every aspect is linked to another with in the design to create the overall effect. All the best, you're doing great.

Jonathan, I really like your idea. I think you are right about the structural wall. But the wall behind the little toilet is a stud wall! The east window in the hall allows in natural light so I think I should keep it. Building on your idea, how about this version? In this scenario, we re-instate the south facing bedroom door so that there is one less door on the east side. As per Jonathan's idea, we create a shower room from the bedroom in the north-east corner. Does it flow? Dear Houzzers, please share your wisdom . :) Where is the best place for the shower room door: where it is now or in the little corridor? Will you feel claustrophobic in the corridor because it is just over 90cm wide and has walls on both sides? What is the ideal side of that shower room? If take out 1.5m from the bedroom, I get a 2.5 x 2.5m square bedroom/study and a 2.3 x 1.5m shower room. Will these sizes work for shower room and study/bedroom? Thanks a million.

Depends on the materials and where you live. But there shouldn't be structural changes so I think between £1k and £2k for the door-window switch. £300 for new laminate worktop and a few hundred for additional cabinetry, You might find you need to redo the floor once you move the sink. I'd budget £3,000, but it depends on you finding a builder at a reasonable rate.

Colourwisedesign, what a beautiful home, they've definitely made an amazing transformation. I like the glass doors, I'm just worried about light but I'm going to look into this definitely as it looks fantastic. Thanks so much. Yes, we have a back door to get into the kitchen that goes in via the conservatory at the minute. My only reservation with laundry and toilet in the area you mentioned is it'd take up space of my decent sized window so it'd darken the kitchen but I love annavals idea of a small toilet under the stairs. Thanks so much. Annaval, wow, I can't believe how similar your house was before, sharing this is fantastic, what a fantastic large space you've created! I can't wait to have the same. Thanks so much for the pictures and floor plans. I am thinking a toilet in the area you mentioned would make sense, I know its a small space but I don't even mind if I just fit in one of those toilets with a sink above, you'd only use it for a second anyway. We have 2 nicer bathrooms upstairs. Can I ask, on the side of the kitchen that I can't see from the photos, do you have worktop space? The opposite side to your hob. Our current kitchen just has wall cabinets but I kind of feel it's a waste of some space. Interesting seeing you've put your laundry on the side, we could do that, we have the space but my husband is regularly carrying tools and large things down the side of the house to the bottom of our garden where we have storage (he's a builder so think he needs to be able to do that really). So I think that rules out side extension for us. I'm thinking there might be a small amount of room on one side of the new extension though as I don't mind if it's a tiny room (stacked washer and dryer and a small amount of space to put some clothes out to air - I've seen them cables on the ceiling to save space). Only reason I want one is because I get sick of seeing my washing on my clothes horse in the kitchen all of the time! It makes it look messy. Thanks so much everyone. I just need to work out this utility area (if I can have one). And work out if I want a glass wall or not.
