Dark landing dilemma

Hi all

Just briefly, I've recently moved into a new home which is a Victorian 3 bed semi. The house is long and narrow and the upstairs landing struggles with natural light. One of the back bedrooms has this diy unfinished wall which I'd quite like to make into a glass wall with the door remaining as it is. I'm just struggling to come up with a glass design which will suit the house and not look to much like an office or a commercial space. Any ideas very welcome. Thanks. Matt

I would make the door match the other doors.

To introduce light to the landing I would glaze a loft hatched sized hole in the ceiling and put a velux in the roof. I have seen many victorian houses with a glazed panel in the ceiling. Normally it is etched, colourless, frosted glass.

Hello pottydimley, Well it does sound like it has character and interest.. Could you have a series of slim tables situated opposite the doors.. with mirrors which would throw light along or portraits above... or both... It could give the eye something to look at when coming out of the rooms.. Or a bench or two and something above them.. .. Consider antique pieces perhaps... You could have some tapestry style hangings. With such a long landing, you could have an array of things that perhaps fit with the rooms, so to speak.. It may be that the rooms have a certain feel and therefore you may wish to take that into consideration... I think it sounds fantastic! : ))

Many people simply replace the existing doors with oak ones and keep white skirting and architrave. Just remember the white will need painting in due course whereas if you have Oak there too it time it will cut down the maintenance.

we are going to be putting LVT flooring on our stairs and carpet on the landing.....how do we finish the top stair?? does anyone have any ideas or pictures would be great? struggling to think of a solution that won't become a trip hazard!! thanks

We have 2 doors with borrowed lights above them and it transformed a dark hallway into a brighter one. Only thing to consider is fire regs - if in doubt install fire glass. Also whether light coming in through the borrowed light in the summer months would cause any disturbance at 4am!
