North facing lounge

My lounge has one north facing window and one east facing window, and I have never had successful colour on the walls! Even though they are painted the same colour, they all look different due to the different aspects. The carpet is a light sand and I have a warm cream leather corner unit. The furniture is otherwise beech. The curtains at present are very striking abstract flowers in a lovely warm red, and ivory. What colour walls should I have if I keep the curtains, and can anyone suggest another colour scheme to go with the carpet and furniture (which cannot be changed) other than red to keep a warm feel to the room?

I would also remove or change curtains. I'd go for a simple cream Roman blind. I would paint the walls an off white and use a wallpaper with a slight metallic print in it. Laura Ashley have some beautiful subtle ones. Change the rug to cream colours with maybe a hint of light Aqua/teal/duck egg and get cushions in matching colours. I would also put another mirror on the wall opposite the window to reflect any possible light. You could also pick accessories such as silvered glass candlesticks etc to also pick up any available light source.

Hi Christal99 I'd suggest sticking with the mix of Elephant's Breath and Skimming Stone rather than a blue-grey wall as I think a blue could be too cold. If you wanted the feature wall to be a touch more grey you could use Purbeck Stone for the feature wall with Skimming Stone for the rest of the walls. For all wood work I'd suggest using the feature (darker) wall colour. Hope that helps! PB

Hi Emma. For a long narrow room (relatively speaking as it isn't narrow!), you could paint the 2 short walls the dark colour as this will "correct" the room's proportions rather than paint the long wall as it will accentuate the length. Alternatively you'd normally paint the fireplace wall to highlight the feature. I think as you've got doors it should break it up a bit but I'd do the doors in the same colour. I would probably go for something a bit richer than pitch blue, like Hague blue. I know whose room that is you've pictured in the 2nd pic so will try and find the colour but am sure it was a valspar paint! You could also try downpipe which works well in a north facing room. I'd probably put these with warm whites/neutrals rather than grey. Elephants breath can work really well in a north facing room but can also just look grey and agree with littlesongs comments! You could also go dark on all walls and layer the lighting, add mirrors etc. Or if you decide light then people can make colour suggestions for that :)

This is my a north facing lounge at present. Picture 1 shows the east facing window, picture 2 is the same window from the far end of the room and picture 3 is the north facing window. Any suggestions are very welcome! No have tried to bring warmth in with the curtains, but the walls just do not work!
