Need help for an extractor fan for our new kitchen

We have had a new latte handless gloss kitchen fitted and have a range cooker. We are not sure on the best extractor fan. There are no cupboards on the wall above the cooker area. We wondered if an angled extractor would look best but it's a modern house and ceilings are not high. Need a splash back too. Any ideas?

Dear Marie,

From technical and performance point of view you need to take into account weather it is a ducted out or a recirculating fan, how often and what you cook. For aesthetics please consider the size and the finish of the existing cooker when choosing the hood. You might find interesting solutions at

I like Option 2 honestly. Obviously you are finding it hard to visalize what the space will look like but honestly that is a huge space so I would recommend putting in the utility considering what you gain from it. You gain a space where you can block out the sound of the washing machine- who wants that sound when your eating dinner? Also washing is unsightly- do you wants piles of clothes in your nice brand spanking new kitchen? In terms of the corridor you are going to have lots of light coming through from the new extension. When you enter the front door and can see straight through to the garden spaces feel much bigger than they actually are anyway. Also who says it has to be boring. Have some fun wallpaper or colourful art hanging. Also if you want to make something more spacious use sliding doors for utility and wc. Less items infringing on corridor space. And lastly, the reception is purely personal preference based upon how your family function. Personally I prefer two rooms. Allows for more space to get away from the open plan area. Mini adults room and a kids room/study. Hope this helps

We have a Novy Pure’line built into the ceiling above our island hob in our open plan room and are happy with it. It‘s powerful but also quiet. Also a very discreet design. Westin Stratus was another contender which may be more well known in the UK - Westin are very helpful on the phone if you have queries. If you have a limited ceiling void (eg in an original period building rather than an extension) you may need the Westin Stratus Compact. We do have an electric opening skylight right behind the extractor fan which we use if frying something particularly smelly or smoky - would that be an option?
