Our new kitchen finally finished - a year in the making!
We've been working on the entire house at the weekends only, however we started work on the kitchen pretty much 1 year ago today. It's been in a liveable condition for quite some time, however it's 99% furnished and finished now. There are still a few little bits to do such as blinds, but it's done.
We bought the house which had a kitchen and dining room at the back of the house. The kitchen was a red, white and black kitchen which wasn't really to our taste - the cabinets themselves weren't particular good either. The dining room served no use to use, so we decided to completely gut the room, knock out the wall, build a utility and create a big kitchen diner.
The kitchen was design by myself. I've never designed a kitchen before, so this was a big learning experience and challenge. Some of the measurements weren't half cutting it close, but it all fit. The kitchen itself is from Crown Imperial - Rialto Handleless in White.
There have been numerous issues and challenges throughout doing this, from plumbers flooding the house, ceiling cracking and being taken out, to having to strip all the old paint from every surface. The kitchen, like the rest of the house has been entirely a DIY project, with a bit of help from a family member in the trade.

Comments (22)I think that is a lot better. YAY! You'll get good flow from the utility straight into the kitchen with your shopping bags, coats, etc. and it looks like there'll be enough space in the "extended hall" to use it constructively. I do have a couple more questions/suggestions: - The doorway from the utility with the fridge next to it - if the fridge door is open, you won't be able to get through. Also, because the area next to the fridge is all wall cabinets, you might have the "where do I dump things?" issue. I would put another counter on the left wall between the two banks of cupboards. It'll probably only be two or three cabinets and counter, but I think it'll be handy. OR you could put the FF there. - I'd centre the hob on the island, but I think that is a good spot for it. - The other thing is something One Plan raised - walk in pantry? You could have part of the utility dedicated to this, or do you think you'll have enough food storage with the wall cupboard near the ovens (I assume this will be a pull out number as these are really handy to be able to see everything....See MoreLighting and Layout idea in the kitchen
Comments (10)Its worth talking to lots of people/places, last year I had at least six design and quotes for my large open plan kitchen and living area. Quotes varied between £9k-£24k (after negotiation) and designs were in the main very boring. The best one that had the most different ideas that really worked for us was from Ikea. You just need somebody who has imagination and listens to you, about how you use the space and respects your likes and dislikes, sometimes that person is in the most unlikely place. Comments (49)We had a similar problem. Had two rads and two plinth heaters, but they weren't working properly and we were freezing. Had the plumber in and he adjusted them and now we're toasty in a matter of minutes. Get one plinth heater put in and plug in a small electric coal or log effect stove ( cheap enough) to bridge the gap. If your windows are thermally bridged have you thought about contacting the window installer to complain , about the problems you are having? The builder, too , as he should have ensured your extension was properly insulated. The suggestion about thermal lined curtains that pull right back during the day is spot on as it will help insulate the room and the kitchen will be warmer in the mornings to come down to. Finally the door is essential as both the hall and front door area are most likely sucking away any warmth from the kitchen area, especially if there is a stairwell. I now think if I was doing mine again I would dig up the floor and put in underfoot heating but this is way too disruptive to consider now. Comments (29)Dear all, many thanks for your wonderful support. We are scheduled to move in Jan 12, and sorry to say, but we decided to postpone our kitchen update. It will be too much to handle for us. moving, contractors, business travel, etc. I hope that one day, sooner rather than later, I can give you a wonderful update on our kitchen remodel, incorporating some of the ideas that you contributed so generously.
