light, open dining room/family room with awkward space - help!
Comments (1)Looks like a bonus to me! And so cosy and with great news. Almost a bit like a gigantic bay window. Just perfect for a contemplative cup of tea or for reading a newspaper. Things that spring to mind: reading nook (any smallish arm chair with a lamp next to it - or look up 'stories' for this) and/ or window seat (perhaps using a large footstool) and or a small writing surface (fitted right into the corner, preferably without too many legs on show or a small pedestal writing table (less desk, more cards). Hope this helps....See Morefamily/sitting room
Comments (14)Hello motocross1, There's a whole lot you can do with such a room.. The main aspect are the height of the room, the fireplace which is the focus and feature of the room and then you have the addition of the french windows.. I think it would be fabulous to have some sort of dual aspect seating arrangement.. like a centrally placed chaise longue that is open or a day bed or something that is facing both the fireplace and the french windows depending on which side you sit.. Painting those cabinet doors to blend with the wall colour means that you can give the fireplace a more subtle frame.. Adding the most amazing mirror would then give it a fabulous finish.. It also reflects the light and the doors opposite.. A chandelier too would be a fabulous addition but something a little unusual. I would then consider two large columns with either a statue or a beautiful vase with expansive fronds situated in front of the little rads either side of the french doors.. An armchair for example situated angled in front of one side or either side of the fireplace.. and a sitting chair in closer proximity to the french doors.. Console on the window side with a large decorative piece or floral arrangements. Or consider an antique desk which would also be a lovely addition to the room. Having a dual aspect so to speak giving the sitter a view of either focal points makes for a perfect sitting arrangement and a statement piece in a room that would compliment it entirely.. With a drop down for example on a chaise longue or as this one is.. Pare with side tables to compliment which can be moved around as and when. :)) Images are a range of period to more contemporary which could be wonderful.....See Morepainting tips for family room / living room feature wall
Comments (1)Hi Liz, for a relaxing, cosy feel to a room, I'd generally recommend painting the ceiling and the walls the same colour, or at least no more than 2/3 shades difference (darker on the walls and lighter on the ceiling to give the feel of additional height). Having different colours works in some spaces but can be distracting and as you already have the fireplace as the feature, I'd avoid it. You can always add a mirror or some art to the chimney breast to really enhance it. Alternatively, if you're really keen to use two colours, then you could consider painting the top half of the walls one colour and then use a darker shade on the bottom half, using the height of your fireplace as the halfway guide. Hope that helps? Jo (Room4 Interiors)...See Morekitchen/family/dining room layout
Comments (11)Hi Sarah Have you got multiple quotes from different builders or are you only working with 1 builder quote? Please note that it is always best to get multiple quotes, so you can assess what the real cost is, in your area. Please note that, I also agree that the overall cost would be base on the scope of works or the list of works to be gone by the builder and the specification of the finishes to the installed within your project. regards Erwin...See Moredesertrat4556
