Hallway & stairs

We want to replace a worn (cat damaged!) stair carpet with Vinyl on steps & in our hallway. We live in a reasonable sized 3 bed house. The hallway area is approx 4m by .8 m and the area under the stairs is approx 2m by 1m. There is a coir matting by the front door which is about 1 m & .8m. The stairs (11 steps) & landing are approx 3.4 sq m & the passageway to the bathroom is about 4 m by .8 m, making about 9 sq m in total!

I agree with the radiator cover idea and I would put a large, very wide, rectangular mirror above it instead of the photographs. I think this would do a much better job of expanding space and creating light than the mirror at the end of the hall (although there's no reason you can't have both). Depending on how it looks with the large mirror I might also remove the thing hanging to the left of the door. In the space in the second photograph I would either remove that photograph in between the door and cabinet on the left or I'd have it in a white frame if you'd really like something there. In the third photograph I like the idea of a collage of frames leading up the stairs, but I find these frames a bit too chunky and rustic looking in that space. I think some white-framed or black-framed photographs would look better like in the above post. There the frames are simple but the photographs themselves inject colour which is carefully chosen and the end result is crisp and fresh and looks fabulous. At the top of the stairs I think one large rectangular print would look better than the two smaller ones.

It is a bit of a pity to have the staircase crossing the new larger hall. Would it work to rotate the stair as Jonathan has shown but pull it towards the front door and put the loo underneath at the back. That would mean you have to put a slope on the roof of the hall extension so the stair could run up under it but from what I can see it might work ok with the other pitched roofs of the house. You would have to make the landing window smaller (or lose it completely) but you might also be able to open up the space between the hall and the landing creating the feel of a double height space. If all the headroom requirements work I don't think that would require altering the first floor plan. Quite a bit of structural work though!

Hi, congrats on your new home! Very exciting. This space appears to be either north facing or just not an area with a lot of warm light...I have been helping quite a few clients with this dilemma lately and here are a few tips for you. North facing/lowlight rooms can be difficult to decorate as the natural light coming through will have blue/grayish undertones. This could make some paint colours look dingy or too cold (which I think is happening now). Warm grey works well in north facing/low-light rooms and here are a couple color combos from Dulux which you can get at B&Q. Just make sure the undertones are warm (not blue or grey). Dulux also has a ‘Light and Space’ paint finish that is supposed to reflect light in the room. https://www.dulux.co.uk/en/products/dulux-light-space-matt. If it's dark wood... it's dark wood. It's nice to preserve an original feature but sometimes it just doesn't work anymore so it's time to update. If it was a mistake to use such a dark floor in a dark hall you shouldn't have to live with that mistake just because it's old. Option 1. Remove it and use it elsewhere in the house. Some of it can be used to make furniture or a wall feature. Replace with light floor of your choice. Option 2. Leave it as an original feature but cover over it with a new floor. Laminate / carpet etc. It's always there in case you want to bring it up again at a later date. Option 3. Use stain on it as required and accept that it's a dark floor. Use light paint on the wall and a large runner down the middle to cover enough of it so it doesn't have as much impact. Think of other ways to brighten up the hall e.g. increase the glazing in the front door or the door into the kitchen, remove the small wall next to the kitchen door and replace that with a glass panel, use mirrors, add artificial lighting etc.
