Refurb of cloakroom

We have just had this toilet and vanity unit installed and I need some ideas to add that wow factor. I intend to have white walls but would like some tiles and a mirror. There is not a window. Existing spotlights are ok.
Am thinking of silver glass mosaic tiles just as a splash back.
What do people think?

Just be careful with the colour choices for the mosaics, which i think is a great idea. Silver is a cold colour, and you're already going for white walls. The floor is terracotta and your vanity unit pine, they are both warm and have red tones, so you need something that goes with those, pale greens, possibly a bit of turquoise ( depending on shade ), pale raspberry ( Warm Tones ) Change the little handle on the cupboard for one the same colour as your tiles. Maybe get in a nice large mirror, to throw light around, and have the frame the same toning colour. There are some fabulous stained glass mirrors about that could incorporate your colour scheme !

Hello Astrid, I have no idea about the situation of your house with respect to trees and the like but from what I've done with extentions I have learnt the hard way to maximise the natural light. The more you extend a house the further the center of it is from natural light and can make it look 'gloomy' so factoring in windows becomes quite important when considering an extention. South facing windows will always get the most sun so the more the merrier in that respect and Windows that face dark buildings stop the light reflecting into a room. Good luck with your extention, the house sounds like a real find!

Hahahaha Joanna! Honestly me and hubby have also invested emotion into this. Seems like we are in the same boat, rewire/ installing gas, putting in central heating, all the works basically! I would love to know how it all comes along for you. I wish we could do house tours on houzz for the amateurs like me! Whilst the amazing houses from interior designers and architects are so inspirational, not everyone like me can afford their expertise for first timers and would amazing to see what other first timers have done. Hi. It's hard to tell colours online but your tiles seem to have a green undertone, wonder if farrow and ball mouses back (1st pic) would work? I'd add a wooden bath mat, this one is available from Victorian plumbing. On the wall opposite the sink a towel holder with a hammam towel, this is from not on the high street and available in a few colours. Do you also have room for art on that wall? I'd add a potted plant at the end of the bath. If you have the space then 3 small dark wood shelves over the wc and mirror over the sink and add candles etc.

Incidentally the cabinet is oak, not pine.

The Moroccan tiles are very nice but not for me. Thank you for the suggestions though. It helps me to realise what I really do and don't like :)

I agree with earlier comments about mixing styles and think a more earthy choice of tile would be best.
How about limestone?

I can see why you would suggest limestone, which would go very well. However, I am trying to get away from that earthy, country style. I know you may not think so given tiles and cabinet. Tiles were laid several years ago as part of a much larger area. Still very practical with 2 dogs as do not show any muddy footprints, which is great. The unit was chosen for size although I do really love it.
I am trying to achieve a more contemporary look now and love the light bright reflective finishes.
Of course I don't want to end up with a mish mash which is why I am seeking ideas and opinions.

What about introducing a dark green tile?.. Herringbone design could give a fantastic texture and something dramatic for a small cloakroom loo.

Consider painting the cabinet entirely to match the wall tile (should you do that) like the dark green herringbone tile pictured. The glass bowl would look good sitting on a green base. You could have the herringbone pattern all round the lower portion up to the sink or just above.. then paint the top portion a lighter colour if you wanted or keep it darker which I think would be very atmospheric and add a fantastic brass mirror such as this one.. If you have the height above hang portrait but something along these lines would be fabulous.. The differing textures makes for an interesting finish.. Mapei black grout would be good for tiles such as these... Perhaps a brassy light fitting to compliment and voila.. .. : ))

Hi Molly, I like your idea of keeping the walls white and I would keep things simple. I would tile around the basin in a white tile, not too plain or too fancy, personally I like Porcelanosa and if you only need a few it shouldn't cost much. Definitely a mirror, without seeing the rest of the room I would guess on the wall behind the toilet, a glazier will make a mirror to your exact measurements. I'd change the spotlights to glass/crystal something with a sparkle. If there's anything left in your budget, accessories in a neutral shade and a suitable print/art for the wall maybe with a touch of black/metallic.

I would go for a coloured glass splashback by the handbasin the same colour as tiles and I think the idea of dark green tiles would look good. Tile all the wall area. It looks like a small room and I would not have too many different material in it, it would just look "bitty". Also paint the skirtingboard the same colour as the tiles. Hang a large simple mirror with a lamp fitting above.

I agree with painting the cabinet, natural wood doesn't work well in a confined space. Farrow & Ball Skimming Stone for the cabinet and for the walls Elephants Breath - brick tile splash back for the basin and a mirror framed and painted in same colour as cabinet.

If you're going for a contemporary look, I'd paint the cabinet. Maybe a tone to match the grout in your floor tiles. I think it would bring the basics together more and free you up to add colour and personality with your wall tiles and mirror.

I would suggest wallpaper on the walls in a modern geometric style, with glass overlay as splash back, or (as we've done) varnish or PVA on the wallpaper where waterproofing required. It is very attractive, and end result much less overbearing and cold which tiles can be. Next and John Lewis both have very reasonably priced geometric wallpapers, and great too that easily changed in a few years to suit whim!

- Molly, as a designer and a householder (who has struggled with these sorts of decisions in own home, despite training) I would definite say, you need something to hold together all those different elements that are going on. You have an interesting mix of materials and styles, quite a contemporary toilet shape as well as the contemporary glass bowl. These are contrast very strongly against the very classic floor tiles and the traditional corner wooden unit, whilst you also have very modern silver reflective mosaic tiles. You've also got two forms of strong grids going in, in the way of the small mosaic squares and the large floor tiles, and lots of different lines in the toilet shape and bowl shapes, angles of the corner unit, etc. If you're not painting the wooden unit a pale white or off white colour (and why would you buy real wood and then paint it?) then I strongly suggest a deepish grey tone to the walls, choose one that blends with the mosaic tiles, so the sit well together (blend rather than contrast), this will form a coherent visual with them. You've got enough warm in the room, by way of floor tiles and wood to make this work without adding coolness. I would then suggest quite a classic looking mirror to draw the eye back to more warmth and contrast with the grey underneath, nothing too fancy, no little patterns to the edges, as you have enough details going on already. A large silver art deco style one, not necessary a bathroom one (they tend to look a bit uninspiring) that will integrate the classic with the contemporary and draw things together with some glamour and style. Just keep an eye on that visual balance, old against new, cool against warm, don't let it tip too strongly one way or the other.

Well said Molly20100, my sentiments entirely! People respond to queries on this site (and ask questions) because they do like things to look aesthetic and also in order to try to help other people out of the goodness of their hearts. My dear father died last month at the age of 92, he would have said exactly the same thing - sure its not life and death (he had been through a war and knew the difference) but he would have helped anyone with any concern, small or large if he could have done so. He also used to say, that one kind one is worth a thousand critical or judgmental ones said in haste.

Much more glam Molly1 I really like the way the red in the picture compliments the warm tones you have already - in floor and cupboard, whilst the mirror is cool and silver - a great balance. Also like the little Buddha figure which adds a note of serenity, I bet you're really pleased with it?

There's these charlie_bill but these are crackle glaze and my image wasn't. However note crackle glaze isn't usually recommended in a wet area such as a bathroom. Although they suggest using a protector... I'd probably want to be absolutely sure they were fit for purpose! Seal or no seal! : ))
