Need help choosing colours for living room
Comments (8)Thanks again :) Hadn't thought about Christmas! Oops, you're right of course, I will have to grab samples if I can and line them up and see what they look like. We've just had the window ripped out and the increase in light is amazing! This at least means I wont be too worried incorporating red in fear of the room looking too dark. The chair rail is a good idea, I'm assuming it's similar to what I referred to as a dado rail? Wooden trim halfway height around the room? We've just ripped ours off, haha, merely because I wanted to completely change the look of the room. Hmm, maybe I've been premature with that decision, it would have allowed me to add a strong colour and still be able to balance it.... Our children are now grown up, one left home, one back and forwards as attending University so no issues with small sticky fingers. However, we do have an incredibly energetic springer spaniel, so I do need the option to 'paint over' any areas he decided he particularly likes! :D...See MoreHelp with living room colour scheme
Comments (23)Thanks guys - some really helpful suggestions coming in! And I hope everyone's had a good Christmas. :) After talking with hubby some more, we've had a slight change of plan and decided not to go with the statement yellow wallpaper. We will still be going with the same colour scheme (mustard & grey with purple accents), but we will be painting the whole room in one colour (light grey or greige) and adding the mustard and purple with the soft furnishings and artwork. Now I'm a little stumped... having trouble imagining where the colours should come in exactly. I will list the items that will be in the room: - 1 sofa (ivory) - Gallery wall above sofa (family photos) - Sideboard which will have the TV on, and tall glass-door cabinet (both Ikea Hemnes grey-brown, which to me looks light brown) - 2 small tables either side of the sofa with lamps on - Large area rug - Hubby's desk and some floating wall shelves above that - Possibly a coffee table or ottoman - Some art (not much, it's a small room) and flowers/other greenery Now that the wallpaper is gone, the first thing I can think of that could bring in a large amount of yellow is the rug... or is it best to keep the rug a neutral colour too? Could anybody post examples of any rugs/artwork/accessories/lamps/side tables that you like and might go with my colour scheme? I am also posting some pictures of rooms that inspire me. Really struggling to envision this room! Thanks :-)...See MoreHelp please for my living room!
Comments (23)There just isn't enough in the room, but all these things come with time and money. I don't think the leather sofa gives at all in the room, it looks really small and heavy looking compared to the new gorgeous one and the chair at the back serves no purpose and looks kinda dumped there. Pictures, side tables with objects on them a rug, large basket with logs or books in it. Don't be afraid to mix things, I have urns, a wooden horse, lanterns, candelabra in my room varying sizes, some real statement pieces. A set of pictures always looks nice too, 4 or 6 together. TK Max is a great place to pic up one off unusual bits for the home it's where I get most of mine from. P.s a nice big mirror always looks great too. Comments (16)I hate to say this as you have just had curtains & pelmet put up, but if you were starting again I would let the curtains hang on either side of the window so they didn't cover the window at all, just the wall when pulled back, this will increase the amount of natural light you have coming in significantly, it would also mean you can lose the tie backs which can look a bit old fashioned. Also it looks like you have one standard lamp & presumably something in the ceiling, add loads of lamps, either freestanding or on tables, also a large mirror opposite the window will reflect light. Also if you look at the pictures above the rooms are quite busy with shelving, ornaments, side tables etc however as it is all in one colour palette it still looks calming. The style of sofa does make a big impact on making the whole scheme look more modern. Also worth thinking about wall paper which can be in the muted tones but can have a texture or low key pattern to it & if you were only going to do one wall, so only a roll or two, you could get an expensive paper with some wow factor to it....See MoreGuigsART
