Making most of existing bedroom furniture

Just wondered what thoughts were on this colour scheme! I am stuck with these wardrobes which I don't like so have introduced a teal colour in room. Is there anything anyone would change or maybe different accent colour. I like modern style

Rather think that bed pictured above was lovely without painting. Such a gorgeous rich wood it's a crime to destroy it. :))

Hello amordesigns,

There is a lot you can do here but teal and the oak colour works well.. You could paint the wardrobes to blend with the alcoves if you don't like them... you might want to add a mirror on the wall behind the chest of drawers... Try moving the teal throw to the foot of the bed... Then introduce two large teal cushions to dress the top of the bed..

The three vases and flowers could sit on the window sill. Try grouping them so they are not so regularly placed.. Maybe add a wicker basket or a small old mid brown leather suitcase.. to sit above the wardrobe on one side.. Thus it looks less uniform which is nice.. : ))

You can move the bed 50 cms off the wall and create a shelving but do NOT fill it with objects. Keep it symmetrical when decorating. Alternatively, you can make it open towards the window to store your linen or other items instead of leaving it exclusively as a shelving. Secondly, to make it cozier, I would re paint the walls in a warm color such as Burgundy and fit curtains in burgundy and gold colors in front of the window. The bottom wallpaper can be replaced with likewise design in silver/grey or black/gold (prominent color being the first one) Bed cover and pillows to blend with the wall and wallpaper colors you choose. That will make it cozier to start with. You will then need adequate light to compensate the dark colors. Ideally smaller lights spread evenly over the ceiling or square lights and two neat lamps on either side of the shelving over the bed. (Can also be fitted onto the wall - Set them out evenly) A nice rug just in front of your bed will give you more of a cozy ambient and give you more warmth to the room. The colors themselves will match your bed, then you can do without the basket in front of the bed. Last, set your room evenly. If you wish to use the painting you already have, move it by the bed and put up another one on the opposite wall and fit a mirror instead of the where you currently have your painting. Move the cupboard opposite the painting, opposite to where you will have your mirror and you have a perfectly symmetrical and cozy room.... I hope my ideas are of help to you. You could put bedside table next to the wall on the left and install a shelf above the heater and that can be your bedside on the right side. The room will look more balanced with the bed in the middle. Or if you can position bed to face your built in wardrobe. Either way you need to address the window covering. If you can find a heavy curtain and bedspread in the same fabric and hang curtain directly under the cornice and twice as wide as your window, that will give you the height and balance the window size and by matching fabric you will have continuity and avoid miss matching colours and patterns.

We did this to make the ensuite the main bathroom, when we converted the bathroom to make an extra bedroom. We stole a toilet and bath width, as the new door went in where the toilet and sink had been, and added a bath in addition to the existing shower. My husband and I did all the work ourselves and did both rooms in a month (whilst working and looking after a baby). The bedroom we stole from ended up 12'2 x 9'3. It was still a good size to have a kingsize bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside table. My husband even fitted in a desk when he was studying.

I would work out the AC and window cost and prioritise from there. For me as I said before I'd look at the sofas and tables as I think most people looking for holiday rentals would prioritise the living spaces. Given it's a 2 bed I think you also need extra seating on the balcony. The sofa attached is also ikea and complements the existing chairs. I actually rather like the terracotta (!) I think it suits the architecture and location. Some turquoise seat pads would look lovely against the terracotta on the balcony (Not this style per se I just saved any old pic!). The beds look quite nice until budget allows, I think just adding pattern and texture for cushions and a throw would look nice. I'd also go for grander bedside lamps. I think at some point I'd update the kitchen once you get the rent money rolling in but as most people tend to do little cooking whilst away it may not be the first priority? The bathroom could be updated with accessories but hard to tell what can be added from the picture. If you did happen to go for a slightly coastal feel ikat cushions would look lovely. Being able to paint yourself is definitely a plus!

Definitely paint the wardrobes. They're a nice style, just a bit ...woody. It'd be a relatively cheap and easy makeover- and if that's real wood it'll look fab painted.

I would be more tempted to paint the bed -- not sure how practical that is. I think if you could move the chest of drawers it would take the focus away from acres of wood and I would also be tempted to wallpaper behind the wardrobes in the alcoves with something that has teal in it (and perhaps some mustard hints) too, again to take the focus off of all of the wood. Looking at the second picture, I think you need some variety as at the moment, you have woody tones and blue. Perhaps different artwork and lampshades ....?

I would definitely paint the wardrobes and chest of drawers in a farrow and Ball or Little Greene eggshell paint, we have painted many pieces of furniture and given them a new lease of life

Thank you for all suggestions. Have given me some great inspiration. I have decided to mix some navy blue with the teal and oak. Pictures to follow if it works out!

Hi. If you wanted something more dramatic you could paint the room in a dark teal (light in the room looks good).

Paint the wardrobes in an inky blue but I'd change the hinges. I think the room needs pattern and some texture. A different throw would make a big difference with a pile of cushions! They've used bronze in this room for the curtains which would look great for some accessories

Hello Amordesigns,

Do show some pics when you have finished. Also light levels are not the only consideration when going dark. Spatial considerations apply too. Same with bed dressings it has to be according to the room and size of the bed. Like the sound of some navy! :))

Just thought I would share these finds following on from adding navy to teal. The cushions I already had, accessories saw today and love the lamp. Baskets maybe to go above wardrobe and mirror i like but unsure. Looking for nice quality throw but cant seem to find any. Your thoughts appreciated:)

Hello Amordesign,

Those cushions are good and the pattern offers interesting contrast. You could add two larger plain ones too with the blue in front..

Think the shade is good too and the basket. The Mirror I would suggest to be slightly squarer... The dark is rather nice isn't it and gives the room a nice contrast.. Definitely don't do the shabby chic look... please. Crisp and stylish... :))

Have you thought about sanding the wood back, painting on a lovely chalky off-white paint (perhaps Annie Sloan or Farrow & Ball) and then scuffing the edges a little for a lived-in feel. This will give your wardrobes such a lift and lighten up the room too. Pop along to Loaf.com for a little inspiration from our hand-painted white or scuffed grey furniture if you fancy.

Having painted our pine furniture in Annie Sloane paint after going on an Annie Sloane course, if I could turn back the clock I just wouldn't do it again, not in chalk paint anyway. My kitchen is hand painted in Little Green Paint and the finish is much much better. The kitchen fitter used a 2.5" brush which was very narrow thickness wise which gave a lovely fine coat and finish. I love my painted hand built kitchen and would have preferred to do the bedroom furniture in Little Greene paints had I known beforehand. Nevertheless, I would say don't paint the furniture!! Don't spoil that lovely wood, the bed is gorgeous as it is too. Think about painting the ceiling a dark colour, which would calm the room down, and with white walls all over, which will make the furniture stand out and finish off with accessories in the same colour as the ceiling. The breast which is painted the teal colour doesn't look right, it makes it more prominent and stands out too much. You may regret painting the furniture, just like me!

Thanks gd11 for your comment. I wouldn't have painted the wardrobes as they are really nice wood so you are right would be a shame to paint over nice wood. I will be replacing them at some point. The reason for chimney breast being painted was that I had never used much colour before, so thought I would try small section and realized I love adding colour. I have added few accessories i.e baskets, new lamps, new cushions and room looks in my opinion a lot better! Thanks to suggestions in this post simple things make a big difference.
Have not added anything to chimney breast yet as not found anything I like yet. Before and a not finished After pics attached. I like the room a lot more now....wouldn't say I love it but I really like it. I do have large silver stand up mirror on the other side of room with silver ornate dressing table, and it actually goes well with wood and bed for now. Thanks again for comments

I think painting the furniture is a really good idea if you want a more modern look and feel. Depends how adventurous you are!?

You could paint the wardrobes teal and the walls off white or vice versa. Or one of my favourite colours is taupe. It really brings a modern edge to any furniture, it is a warm and calm colour and it combines well with many accent colours, such as pink, aqua, lime, gold, white, I could go on.

Have a look at this bedroom furniture, which was given a modern, 'up cycled' look by using a taupe paint.

I hope it inspires you!

It's fun trying new things with a paint, not too expensive and you can change it easily if you don't like it.

It looks like if you continued the teal paint behind the wardrobes it would help to integrate them. It just looks a bit stop start to me & I can see that beautiful colour on the whole wall. I also like the idea of keeping the timber for now ;)

Can I ask where you bought the navy cushions and lamp, they are lovely, I'm changing my living room accessories from grey yellow to grey navy.

Hi Mary what a lovely room. The cushions I bought ages ago, I think they were from Wayfair. I have had them for over a year so not sure you will be able to get them now. Lamp shade is from The Range. they sell the shades separately so had to buy base too.

I'd detail the Cupboards by using a water based eggshell (easy to strip off if needed!). Either paint to 'frame' the wood or just the inner panels, either the teal or wall colour..

Thankyou Ufundi I ended up buying slidey door fitted wardrobes as needed space and didnt want to paint wardrobes as good quality. Thankyou anyway
