Windowless bathrooms

Im in my new house (yay) and it has a lot of potential but needs a lot of work. One of the ideas im toying with is spliting a huge room into two, and making half of it the master bathroom, but this bathroom would have no windows (middle of terrace).

Personally ive always had a window and find it odd not to have one, but en suites,hotels etc often have no windows in the bathroom. So im looking for feedback on whether this is a good idea, devalues the house, or if its just down to good lighting, maybe a light tunnel instead?

Ideas/thoughts/photos greatfully received :-)

In a previous house we had both a family bathroom and en-suite located centrally within the house. I agree with the comments above. Additionally, make sure there is an sufficient ventilation with an efficient bathroom fan, ideally as quiet as possible.

Hi Paul, there are many ways you can make a room feel light. Using highly reflective tiles and mirrors helps
to bounce light around. Reflective floor tiles will also help. Stick with light colours too. If you could introduce a light tunnel that would be a great idea but not imperative. Hope this helps, good luck.

Our ground floor shower room is built to the boundary and has a sky light. There is a good extractor fan directly over the shower and moisture isn't a problem - building regs will dictate that you need a certain volume of extraction so shouldn't be an issue. Our utility has an end window but I wish it has a skylight too as I'd like more natural light over the sink which is on the boundary wall. Would skylights or light tubes be an option? What will you use utility for - will natural light be important?

Hi Paula, why don't we try and base the design from the items that you don't like: green floor and magnolia basin and toilet. You could paint the walls in two colours, splitting them in an horizontal way (see inspiration picture attached). The bottom part could be a similar green to the floor and the top part a magnolia like the sanitary ware. You can also paint the radiator in the green colour like the walls. I would stop the green like 15/20 cm above the top of your sink to create a kind of splash back effect. You can then add pictures on the walls to make it more cosy. Ceiling painted in the magnolia colour and skirting too. This is the cheapest solution I could think of... Good luck!

Think i'd be tempted to have the mirror just on the sink side, you will see the whole bathroom when you walk in, reflected in it. Mirror above a bath unless seperated by some tiling will be an absolute pain to keep smear free, and it may be a little overkill. Plus, maybe bathing and looking in the mirror at the same time, not to relaxing??

Yes the level of ventilation was one of my main concerns. Needs to be good with no windows.

Im hoping to put a room in the loft, otherwise I would have full height ceilings to a velux. I think i can get away with a light tunnel.

Hi Paul McCann

Have you considered a 2in1 ceiling light and an extractor fan to brighten up the room and keep it ventilated. The fan is discreetly hidden underneath the lighting fixture and won't be noticeable, but still do the job of dehumidifying and illuminating your bathroom.

Hi, we have done similar things with a number of clients and the spaces can look stunning even without windows (have a look at our portfolio on Houzz ). It is important to get advice from an experienced builder on ventilation/extraction options and then consider lighting/mood including the focal layer (features in the room to highlight), task layer (i.e. around the sink unit and mirror), general ambient lighting, feature decorative lighting to draw the eye and also the colour temperature of the LED bulbs you select (it makes a HUGE difference to the feeling of the space). Also, consider the surface finishes (floors, wall tiles) so that they reflect rather than absorb light. Hope this helps, best regards, Mike Lander, Director, Ensoul
