Comments (8)Just wanted to say what a fantastic kitchen. So pleased you're keeping it! Formica would be the period correct work surface and can still be bought but may not fit with your budget? I would also look at having a carpenter produce your cabinets. They can be cheaper than off the shelf and would be better build. To save some money you could buy cheap plain carcasses and have a carpenter make doors to match the existing ones that you can then paint. Comments (6)If you have a magnet, hold it to the Le Creuset pots. If it sticks to the pot, you can use it on an induction hob. I’ve recently switched from gas to induction. Induction is much quicker and you can let the burner switch off automatically after a set time. And it’s easy to clean. So far the advantages I’ve found. Disadvantages: can’t see the flame, so have to work out what the settings do. I’m taking a long time to get used to that, but then again, I’ve only ever cooked on gas before. Sometimes the pans make an annoying high pitched tone. I had to buy new pans, but my big iron stew pot (not Le Creuset) should work on it. Haven’t used it yet, but it is magnetic. For my other pans I went to IKEA and got a great set with heavy glass lids from there. Very happy with them. Had to say goodbye to one of my big iron frying pans, because the bottom was slightly warped and then it doesn’t work well either. All in all I’m happy with the induction hob. I love the speed. But I think I still prefer gas. Anyway... we have a downdraft in an island, so gas wasn’t an option. But you could do both perhaps? Comments (17)Thank you very much for your replies. @annabellaamy, hubby and I have now thought about this and we'd rather have a separate door for the lounge as it feels we wouldn't be able to fully utilise the dining space as we'd have to always walk through it (I hope that makes sense!). @Donna yes you are right, storage is really the biggest issue for us currently. As we really don't want a fully open plan space, I think I just have to resign myself to a small kitchen. The main things that bother me at me moment are: -we can't fully open the kitchen door as it hits the cabinets on the left, we don't have a dedicated cabinet or floor space for the bin, so every time we open the freezer, bin has to e moved out of the way. -We absolutely need more freezer space, I was originally thinking of a deep freezer, but a upright freezer with drawer would probably be a far better option. We're now considering possibly extending the kitchen, just up to the dining room store area, getting rid of the store door and instead having under stairs storage drawers that would open into the newly extended hallway. 8 years agoI love wood and and what drew me to this wood laminate is the colour, grain pattern and texture, it feels like the grain has been opened, you could make a feature of the island in this and keep the other cabinets a more neutral colour.
For the work top, most good quartz's are all non porous so no matter how hard you try to stain it with a little Astonish it cleans up nicely.
