Council house

We are trying to buy an ex council house. How on earth are we going to make it op look pretty? Does anyone have any experience?

Hello, council house can be challenging. It would be great if you will have at least some pictures to get a better idea what's it like. Generally, you need to make a list of the first job to make it functional and secure. Check plumbing and electrical provision. Next step, depends on your priority, do you want to get interior done in one gone? or you plan to get done only necessary part to make it livable and move in. And then get rooms done one by one?

Ah I thought I should wait until we know we have secured the house first before I posted a house photo! I will be in touch but for sure it's going to be a big project but I'm up for it as the location is phenomenal and it has a great plot size.

It's great on here to see others work and views. I know it won't need cladding like others but I wondered if something nice like cedar cladding might work on new parts.

Thank u for replying I will hopefully post soon but I know that it will be a 'do it all at once house!'

If you're working on a tight budget, how about some little things now so it looks cheery to come home to while you decide what to spend your money on? You could get some colour out there with some pots, or hanging baskets maybe, without breaking the bank. What about some climbers? I lived in a house very like this as a kid, and my mum always had pots and baskets and honeysuckle on a trellis by the door (painted bright coral...), so it was always a riot of colour and really cheerful. Then take your time choosing a door and a colour you love, or planning a porch.

White and brick is a classic and you really can't go wrong with it. But it does look a bit old and faded. Try looking up companies that do brick cleaning and sand blasting and perhaps reponting in a colour. (they mix the colour to match the bricks or another colour. The thin lines, when viewed from far, can alter the perceived colour of the bricks.- For example if you wanted a ';yellow brick house' but you 're stuck with brown, repointing in yellow will pick up the yellow tones in the brown brick and it will be yellow. Same goes for the other colours found in the brick. examine which colours are present in your current brick closely. Use a magnifying glass if you have to! You will be amazed and all the colours present in there. Then sandblast and have fun. Do this before you change the windows, as sand blasting can be damaging to the upvc, and then repoint after replacing windows. Depending on the colour the walls come out- Ask for samples on a north and south walls- then choose a black frame (for example with black poinitng) or white with the lighter colours. After a decade or two, then I would look at rendering, but for the moment, try the conservative route since the rendered look can't easily be reversed

Post photo when you are ready and comfortable to do so. Pictures will show more than you can expect. You will need to hire different professionals and there will be practical and aesthetics reasons for it. Initial house analysis will help you to save money and time. It is good practice to have whole house done, it is easier to build united design flow around a house. Also consider to get a professional designer, at least on initial stage to understand space to your lifestyle and get detailed guidelines to start.
