Hello guys- I would appreciate some design help with the landscape work here. This is our enclosed front garden around 300ft x 200ft .. We are getting rid of the planting and the wide cobble path in the middle and extending the lawn to the newly established hedge near the patio. The back wall is a dry wall system that is being restored, we anticipate having a small paved section abutting that wall and placed perpendicular to the front door of the cottage. Any planting ideas and hardscape plans would be appreciated! Thanks

vespin, that is a big job. it is going to cost money and it is likely to cost a lot more without skilled guidance.

The best advice I can offer is that you engage the services of a landscape architect or garden designer. Opening the gates to random ideas and suggestions here without having had the relevant conversations about your lifestyle and tastes with us first is opening the gate to more confusion than light.

Totally agree with Freshscaped. Bear in mind that mature, established and private gardens add value to homes. That applies especially with reference to period cottages. I know that a lot of people like clean fresh lines and easy maintenance these days, however, you need to be sympathetic to the surroundings and the building with choice and style of garden. I've seen our neighbours knock thousands off the re-sell price over the years, they're terrible gardeners bless them, they've taken out all the mature shrubs and trees, given over to a lawn, a picket fence that offers no privacy and a patio with some pots. The garden no longer gels well with the 150 year old property and it never will. Take lots and lots of professional advice.

Garden design - transformation to a wildlife friendly garden

Hi Vanessa, I have written a few blogs with advice about planting for pollinators on my web-site ,Greenwave Design. The main thing would be to reduce the size of your lawn, which is not a very wildlife friendly feature, and put in more trees, shrubs and perennial plants. Wildlife need places to live as well as food so lots of places to shelter in the garden will be helpful. Pollinators want flowers that they can sip nectar from for as long a period as possible. So flowers need to start early, with bulbs such as snowdrops and crocus, and carry on for as long as possible. Another great wildlife friendly feature is a pond, or at the very least a birdbath. If you do put in a pond it needs to have shallow, sloping sides so that wildlife can get in and out easily. There is lots of good advice on the Wild about Gardens web-site.

Hi Eve, Well done for taking on a design project. Always an exciting challenge and by the looks of it you've done yourself proud. I know it's a bit late in the day to give any suggestions but perhaps you could put them to one side for a rainy day? Looking at your patio layout I would suggest a slight tweak in order to have some coherence with the circular or rather flowing feel you have tried to create. Notice how in my quick scribble I've taken out the sharp corners of the paving by making a curved edge, which is easily achieved by cutting the stone to suit the site, such as natural sandstone or preferably dark material such as slate. To hide the cut edges you can install edging cobbles or blocks with small low profile led lights interspersed between the edging blocks? Please see attached scribble to see what I mean. Second thing and this is of course completely budget dependent is because you already have a lovely stark white fence you might want to consider contrasting that with a dark material for your hard landscaping such as a nice slate or dark black limestone pavers? Hi Ellie, ok I will edit it more as it should read we want all the shrubs and trees removed which is a tall feat when your not qualified I would guess. Also with the council not available to remove garden waste, we already have a lot piling up with the compost awaiting the date for when we can remove it. Our garden already has fence all the way around, however it needs updating as it has broken it a lot of places.

Thank you guys very much appreciated! We are definitely on a restoration programme so we are mindful to keep all period features including all trees and shrubs - so we have got a local stonemason with experience in traditional style to guide us through (www.mtstonemasons.com)

For example
-we have stumbled upon an old well that was buried and topped out with a manhole cover- this is now going to be restored as a wishing well with period details (based on old photos) - see pic

- we have reused all the stones from the collapsed old wall to restore the same using a drywall effect, following local tradition

- all mature trees and shrubs have been retained and repositioned where appropriate taking account of sun aspect etc any new shrubs to be introduced will be of similar variety of trees/shrubs in the garden etc

- old flagstones retained and will be re-used for garden paths etc using lime pointing to match the granite cottage detail.

There are some nice plants there, so do not be hasty in getting rid of them as they would cost a lot to replace. Hard landscaping will certainly make a large difference. What I would do is make the garden private - close it off with planting from the driveway and other houses.
