French Grey is a lovely colour, I'd live with it for a while and the rug colour may be skewing it a little. I'd add a Roman blind to soften things, style it up a bit and see how you go. On the rug front - I think they are fine in a kitchen. Kitchens often had rugs but now it's frowned upon for some reason but they seem to be making a come-back I'm pleased to say as they add a lovely, comfortable homely feel. Find something washable, ideally a pattern, use underlay to anchor/stick it down if you're worried about slips and trips (depends on weight of rug). Size-wise, don't run it too close to units to avoid worst spills etc. The new synthetic indoor/outdoor rugs will work well or a washable cotton.

It's worth thinking about the natural light in the room when looking at colours - e.g. if it is a north facing room the light can be a bit cold so it is important to choose a colour to help with that. What's the light like in this room? Firstly I would say go with what makes your heart sing. And if you don't like it at some point in the future, repaint it! But for me personally, pink wardrobes and pink walls would be a bit too much. And black wardrobes and ammonite walls would be too grey/cold. Other options would be soft black wardrobes and potters pink walls, or blossom wardrobes and ammonite walls. The two inspiration pics you've shared both mix a pink with a grey, so perhaps that's the look you're really drawn to, rather than the all-pink or all-grey options you've described?

I suppose it’s a shade of taupe. Lovely colour. It’s one of those colours that looks best with white or off white walls and maybe white tiles in a hand made style such as Zelig. It seems to change with the light.
