Is this room insulated?

We are having a porch like this built,do you have air and heat in the room? If so did they insulate the floors and the ceiling? We are getting conflicting advice? Thank you

Hi Cathy,

Yes this room is insulated in the ceiling as well as the floor there is no wall space so obviously none in the walls. I would say for sure you want to insulate the ceiling as it will keep the heat of the sun out. As far as the floor goes it will extend the use of the room somewhat. If your not sure I would say definitely insulate the ceiling the floor could always be done at another time. Hope that helps

Hi Philip You can hang on wall whatever you like i guess. I would start with a question, is your room soundproofing sorted? After the whole room sound insulation you can then put on wall number of different styles of acoustic panels. And make that way your own art. They are made flat poster look likes or textured like recording studios. I would start with that. Then there are many companies doing large prints so you can use your own photo or picture or notes to make your own personal wallpaper. Just an quick idea anyway:) Kind regards Radek

OK, this is similar to my house, we have a dormered 60's build and you'll probably find that the section beneath the window will be studwork with no insulation, and the slanted roof will be the timber rafters which may (but probably won't) be insulated. Two options, the proper full on options is to lift the tiles off the house and fit phenolic boards between all the rafters. Its the best solution, but its expensive, but will benefit the whole house. The other option is to line the walls, either with batons, insulation and then board and skim over the top, or use the phenolic backed plasterboard such as Kingspan K17, which you can dot and dab onto the walls and then skim over. This will also help enormously, but remember you'll need new skirtings etc and you'll lose three / four inches off each lined wall.

Acoustically Insulated Ducting for Kitchen Extractor

I want to reduce the noise from a kitchen extractor. Due to lintels and joists we may have to use a less preferred route to the external wall through another room. We need to reduce the extractor noise as much as possible. This route allows for wide ducting as well which is good. I have found acoustically insulated/low noise ducting, but it does not appear commonly in reference to kitchen extraction. Can anyone advise and recommend brands and suppliers in the UK?

hi Suzzane, I think that your neighbour has a couple of options. lift the floor boards and place battens between the joists and place a layer of soundblock plasterboard between the joists. It needs to be fitted tight and filled before the floorboards are placed back on the joists. a layer of rock wool sound insulation below the layer will further increase the effect, but it depends on what is in the void. the other is to pay for you to drop your ceiling and have a independent resilient ceiling installed below the existing that can isolate the noise. again the use of a layer of insulation in the floor will help. They probably wont want to do this as the costs will be high, but you have rights over the added noise nuisance this will cause. There are propriety systems that can be used for both systems.
