This house layout it is more common than you might think, although it looks as though the previous owner has thrown up a few partition walls.. Your idea for a single door that leads right into the kitchen would make much better use of your living space. When you are able, I'd certainly recommend making the kitchen and dining area open plan. Lounge wise, I'd probably embrace the space, or lack there of, in the living room, possibly putting the TV etc against the wall when you have removed the false chimney, and put one sofa against against the wall where your dining rooms doors were and another (or two side chairs) against the window so that the seating face one another across the room. You could use the alcove, for a work desk, study area or an additional arm chair if you regularly have more than 5 guests at a time. if you go down the office route, try find a large bureau that will close away and hide all your computer screen etc. If you prefer a square shaped lounge, I'd look into the option of moving the door from the hall into the lounge back towards the front door, this would make your immediate entrance hall smaller, but certainly help open up that alcove space giving you more living space.

Hi there, It would help with an image of your lounge, in order to give you more suitable advice.I can imagine, according to your description, that your lounge is quite spacious, decorated with colourful furniture. From the options you have provided, I would advice to use the LED hoop, as you already have colour in your furniture, I wouldn't advice to have colour in the lighting too. Have you considered other styles that could look great in your lounge? I would love to help you choose your perfect lighting.

Just reading the comments and suggestions on here shows the capacity for lots of variations possible for a design in this size of space. Have you considered investing some time working with one designer - who you can work with to produce a layout that ticks your boxes and then shopping around with the finished plans - (this is the kind of service we provide ) it may be a bit less confusing than several people ‘having a go ‘ - although it’s always great to get others opinions on Houzz, and of course it’s lovely that they are offering you this help at no cost. But might be worth considering, as you will be living with the results for a long time! Having looked at other high valued ceilings many are using fitted lights into the beams (you'd want these on separate lighting switches) - see examples in image 1. This helps create light above, particularly good for evenings and grey days. I see almost 3 levels of lighting here - high to ensure light at the full height (for when dark/grey/create mood), middle level normal height lighting for day to day use and then low level mood lighting (to create atmosphere etc). The lower lever could be achieved with lamps and low hanging pendants e.g. breakfast bar (as suggested above). The mid could come in with the wall spotlights and hanging pendants. I would consider how it will look to have hanging pendants from the ceiling - if you are hoping for lighting above the table area, often this type of look is low over the table, to create the focus, but it might mean having very long cords (I don't know the height of the ceiling so just assuming here) and whether you don't mind that. I found this image below that might give you an idea of how having long cords might look. Therefore you might want to keep the cords thin and unobtrusive as possible. As someone already said, you might want to consider having pendant lights across the whole room rather just dining area - this could mean they would not need to sit as low. You could then use low lamp lighting for the dining area (situated in corners) if you didn't want something on the wall. I found the below images that demonstrated high vaulted ceiling hanging lights. What stands out is that they make a statement - they are big and purposefully used as a statement piece. I actually then looked at restaurant lighting to see what they do - as often they have similar issue of having high lighting whilst wanting to create atmosphere focused light at each seating area. This example is a bit bold - but thought was an interesting example. What often is the case is that the lighting is purposeful around each seating area and you could choose very specific wall sconces to create a defined dining area.
