Do you keep your toiletries on display?

The neat freak in me wants to keep everything out of sight, but there are still a few bottles out on display in my bathroom. The toothbrush is hidden away in the bathroom cabinet though!

What do you prefer? Toiletries on display or not?

I think it is always good to for a home to show that someone lives in it, while showing a disdain for clutter. The obsession to want to hide everything out of sight can only lead frustration if those you live with do not share the same vision as you. It is unrealistic to keep our homes persistently as a show home.

We try and keep them all tucked away with just the toothbrushes in a cup for detail....but after a busy week at work this is not always the case and my standards slip (or were never there according to the other half)

Our TV stands on a dining room buffet, which is very good for storage and raises the TV up without having it on the wall (not possible to hide cords with concrete walls). No point in trying to disguise it here. It gets used every evening; besides there's really nowhere to hide it if I did want to.

A house without flowers, to me is just a house, not a home. A room without flowers may wear an expensive ballgown but will be bereft of the loveliest jewels to set it off. All rooms need something living. Even just a single Rose or a sprig of ivy. Fill your garden with flowers & foliage. Tipsy tulips are perhaps my favourite but then I see a bowl of garden Roses & Alchemillimollis, or a glass jar of cow parsley or a jug of white dog daisies, or....

I leave a lamp on permanently on my landing, yes I know it's bad for the planet not to mention my budget but that's what you get for living in a 250 year old house with too little natural light.

I start taking my decorations down in the days after 2nd Jan but usually leave a few bits up until 5th of January, the evening of which, I (and the Church of England) consider to be Twelfth night. It seems logical to me that Christmas Day is the first Day of Christmas, and twelfth night is the last evening before Epiphany. It doesn't make any sense to me to start counting from Boxing Day but I know lots of people believe that it is the night of Epiphany is 12th night and you hear both dates used

I think it depends on what is on display... If it's something lovely like Aesop soaps and other things then why not.. Having said that not all the things I have are expensive! I have a few things on show and the rest are kept in a small cabinet that you cannot see. I'm not a fan of mirrored cabinets or such things.. That is my personal preference re bathroom designs. Practical is one thing just like kitchens, bathrooms for me benefit from being the stars of the show rather than the flavoured oils or shampoo's. James at Landscape Design.. your posting made me laugh.. I also think Peter's point about show homes which is a term I loath as it's absolutely true we must live in our homes whether they are completely tidy or not.. Someone once came to mine and said it was like a museum! Point taken! : ))

Some in the cabinet and some on display. I don't have time to hide toothbrushes!

Out of sight; just a few lovely items on display in the bathroom. The everyday things are in a clear plastic Muji box that I put in the cabinet & then can easily take out for everyday use. I don't want a cluttered bathroom.

Things I use every day are out. I put my shower gels in soap dispensers so they look smarter. I have my tooth flosses in a pretty glass lidded jar.

My bathroom is so small that there was no room above the sink for a cabinet or even shelf, so I have added a couple of glass shelves to the wall beside the sink. They are see-through so they are fairly unobtrusive, and high enough up on the wall to not get in the way. I have put a potted plant on the top shelf for decoration and greenery.

My mantra is to celebrate the way you live. So I tend to use pretty jars, baskets and pots to corral things yet also display them. When everything is hidden away it always feels empty and soulless to me. Also means guests to your home can easily locate anything without opening every cupboard!

One of my favourite things is a pretty vintage amber glass bottle with a typhoon pourer that contains my olive oil for cooking. I use it daily and it looks lovely on the counter rather than hiding the plastic bottle only to have to get it out and open it up each time. You physically waste seconds of your life daily if you take the hide things away method and those seconds add up!

Bit of both. Many items kept tidily out of way for practical reasons, so they don't sit in sun and deteriorate, but I like a few well placed decorative or essential items out. eg, the hand soap dispenser, back brush out. Don't like clutter, and there are contamination risks in bathroom/toilet combo but could not do mimalist either.

Keep a few nice toiletries on display such as perfume and hand lotion, but the rest hidden away in a bathroom cabinet.

I have cupboards under and next to the basin so there is lots of out of sight space for spares. I do keep what I need daily on the surface next to the basin but they are in glasses in a colour that goes with the room and I've arranged them slightly artily so they look considered, not haphazard. That's my view - people who visit my house might think differently! Thinking about it, many of my friends keep everything hidden. When I had my loft converted in my previous home, the architect gave me a very pretty bag to take all my daily stuff in and out of the bathroom - the message was, keep them out of sight. Only remembered that right now. I think I'll have to rethink my routines!

It's a bit of both. I hate all my cleaning products on show, but I don't mind a few lotions and potions as long as they're neat and tidy. We recently moved from a house with cabinets in the bathroom to one where there is an open shelving unit right opposite the door, so it's the first thing you see. We'll refit the bathroom in the next 2 years, but in the meantime I've hidden everything neatly in baskets - who needs to see my bleach? Hide it away!

Hi Emmeline! I'm like you, the neat freak in me always wants my bathroom to look like a showhome or something you'd see in a magazine, although being a typical woman I have more potions in my cupboards than Hogwarts! I like display items on show which includes fancy candles (which my partner seems to LOVE to burn and ruin) but that's about it really. I invested in a large Mirrored cabinet for over my sink which conceals all my everyday items and then I keep all my cleaning products under the kitchen sink! x

We make a conscious effort to reduce the amount of packaged toiletries we buy, relying on Lush products like solid shampoos etc. so there isn't much to see really. Plus these products make the bathroom smell lovely.

I still put our toothbrushes away in cabinet as I was told years ago, during a health and hygiene course about the aerosol effect of toilets being flushed and the 'particles' that fly around the bathroom and supposedly land on toothbrushes when you flush. This myth has long since been busted but I'm still slavishly 'protecting' my toothbrush from non existent flying poo particles!

Everything goes in the cupboard under the sink, except soap in a pretty turquoise glass soap dish, handwash, and toothbrushes and toothpaste in a holder (actually a beautiful turquoise candle holder) all on the sink. Too much stuff on shelves looks scruffy and a nightmare to keep clean. Loads of stuff on kitchen work tops looks a mess too - obviously kettle, toaster etc need to be kept out, the rest MUST go in cupboards! With you all the way!

Toothbrushes on display as they're regularly used. They're one side of the basin and on the other side is moisturiser and hand cream. Soap on the basin alongside the taps.

I can't abide clutter and bathrooms are notorious for dust from talc and residue from sprays. Put everything else behind doors.

I don't like to see toiletries left on window ledges, round the bath etc but when there is space here to use it's a little wasted. So, I have an unusual suggestion! Plant pots!
There are some really nice plant pots around and if you have a look around your local garden centre with storage of bottles in mind you might be surprised what you see. I saw these white plant pots that have a rustic style (which I like) and they now store shampoos etc and are very practical too! You can spot them on the room photo, one on the window ledge, one on the floor.

I suppose it depends... I keep some toiletries on the vanity: cologne, shaving supplies, toothpaste, etc. However, I keep them in marble bins and on rattan trays. I keep other necessities in the vanity drawers.
