Main water line replacement and old maple tree root obstruction

the main water line connecting the street to my house is 65 years old or so. The tree roots over time have put pressure on the line and caused a crack. Ground water is seeping into the line and dripping at a very slow rate but this means MAJOR construction such as digging to the existing line, ripping out the tub and tile work and cement surrounding the line and the plumbing company (will remain nameless here) recommends removing the tree but I don't want to as it provides wonderful shade. Is it not possible to cut or sever the roots causing the damage. I understand this will cause parts of the tree to die. I'm okay with this and trimming back the parts as it does.

Furthermore, the company who found the issue (and videotaped it) will excavate but won't replace a damaged tub or tile. They are quoting me $11,220 (also doesn't include tree excavation). I'm looking to have this work done in Oct as I live in the UK and moving back to the US in Sept. I want to be present for the work.

I'm looking for ideas on what to do with the tree and if anyone knows any reputable companies in the Alexandria, VA area that will provide service that will be able to perform the required work in addition to re-installing the existing tub and tile.

If you want privacy at the front of your home to stop people to seeing in, then you could either change your gates to completely enclosed the area and have a CCTV system set up so visitors can alert you when they arrive. Or preferably, you could separate the two drives by erecting a fence between the two garage doors and plant a nice tall hedge 3/4 of the way along the front boundary to obscure the view of the main house. You could then reverse round the hedgerow and park the car at an angle so it is partially obscured by the hedgerow, with CCTV and security lights shining down from the top of the garage to give you peace of mind. It would be lovely to remove the gates and be able to look out of your front door and see the hedgerows, and they would also help to muffle the sound of the traffic

Hello donned2004, Well you could remove all the things from the hearth.. So it has more space.. Hang the mirror and paint the chimney breast a nice colour to bring the fireplace into full focus.. If you wanted to have an even bigger recess.. you could open the fire out up to the sides of the wooden surround.. So taking out the 30's tiles.. Make sure the lintel is in place or doesn't need replacing and keep the surround it's rather nice.. Remove the current tiled hearth if you chose to open it out more.. and install a flat piece of slate.. So then you would have an open brick recess and a lovely iron basket could sit nicely inside for logs! Another idea to continue into the room.. might be to look at painting the woodwork a colour to compliment any wall colours you have.... Some lovely painted floorboards, or parquet or a natural Jute or Coir flooring if you have not already decided upon something.. : ))

Update january 2022 - Happy New Year everyone! Gosh, 18 months into our renovation now, still loving the house, still lots to do! We are currently having all the guttering and down pipes replaced which has pretty much eaten up the last of our budget, but it'll be worth it to stop the random leaks we've been getting. We have made good progress on the 'posh' living room at the front of the house. The biggest change is the fireplace. Like all the rest in the house it had been ripped out and replaced with a horrid 80's gas thing. We pulled out the 80's monstrosity and were excited to find... A horrible 40's monstrosity! The original was long gone. Luckily I came across an edwardian original on ebay and snapped it up for £99! Sadly it cost a lot more than that to get the flue lined and the fire reinstated but never mind. Hubs did a great job as ever removing wallpaper and fixing walls (two full layers of filler!) and we've even managed to get some colour on. Lot's still to do including all the woodwork but loving it so far!

These are my Japanese acers, I selected the shorter varieties since the drive isn't huge. The red one is approximately 10yo, the other two are 6-7 yo. They grow quite slow and stay compact,in my opinion. I tried to take the photos in front of our Cooper so you get the idea of the sizes. They are Garnet (2+ m) Bi Ho (2m) and Winter Flame (1.5m and it grew 50cm during the last three years). Acers can be shaped, I'll be removing some lower branches to add some structure. They are gorgeous in autumn and passers-by often stop to admire.
