TV unit modification

My husband and I recently moved into a property in West Horndon, Essex. We brought our solid mango wood furniture (TV unit, coffee table and
table) from our previous house, but the main TV unit doesn't fit in the alcove in our living room. We adore the furniture and are loathed to part with it.

Does anyone know of a company that modifies furniture and services the Essex area?

I have attached an image of the unit. It is currently 151cm wide and would need to be reduced by 25cm. This could mean reducing the size of the drawers or losing one of the drawers entirely, which we would be happy to consider.

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Hi kellygreer81, We would say it would be better simply to replace the unit. Do you have any specific budget to work with? If yes please tell us and we could produce a bespoke design & create the Tv unit will suit the budget.

Hello kellygreer81, It is quiet big and time consuming job refit your unit, it will come in price as if to buy new one, not worthy in your case. Try to think how you could reuse it around the house, you still could do small job with it such as extending from the bottom, making it higher and then it could be a side board, for example. There are more other options, depending on what type of furniture you would like to add.

We do spend a lot of time puzzling over how to use the space as it is, as well as how to change it to suit us better.. typical victorian house with kitchen stuck out the back and it is cold and dark, i have seen lots of articles here of similar where people have really opened up the back of the house so it becomes the heart of the home and also opens up to the garden. But we have become paralysed with all the options and the potential cost especially as this house being older and not particularly well maintained previously keeps throwing up extra costs.. new roof, windows and the garage is falling down next on our hit list!!! My partner does have a little desk upstairs in a spare room where he has been working the last few months but wouldn't use after the toddler has gone to bed as she is a light sleeper... and he has been muttering about putting one in the storage room but I know no-one would want to use it as it is a small dark room that gets really very cold in winter and also smells a bit(! we need to get to the bottom of that!!). ive puzzled over fitting one into thr living room too but its an awkward shape and no obvious place for it unless we really think about repurposing it. He is very protective over "his" snug and I suspect whatever we do he will continue to hunch over his laptop on the sofa in there if i don't make the space more fit for the purpose he is using it for. After I posted I did think actually the simplest thing is just to put a tv in there somehow and a little side sofa table thing that would be the right height for using his laptop but I still worry about his back sitting on the sofa for so long . He is quite resistant to change though so I need to make sure I go in with a good proposal! Also we need to find a space elsewhere in the house for my old piano which fits perfectly in the alcove in the snug but stops us using it for anything else... the problem we find with this house and the reason we don't have many cupboards is that every wall seems to be either a door, a radiator or a sloping roof. The obvious thing is maybe to get rid of it, i think we are secretly harbouring ambitions of our daughter growing up to be a better player than either of us which is i guess a pipe dream! I am gradually spending the time to declutter and reorganise which is really helping to think about the space better.. with less stuff we need less storage and i can learn to like this house a bit better! I was finding it frustrating I used to live in a tiny 2 bed house with more storage cupboards but now realise that encouraged me to accumulate more stuff!!! Anyway I think you are all right with the idea we need to use our house differently, i just think it needs a complete remodel! All thoughts gratefully received for temporary fixes and the master plan!

I think alignment would be a better focus rather than symmetry. For example, the drawers at the bottom lining up with the shelf divides. I would personally remove the drawers under the fire and make more of a feature of the fire place/area. There‘s a lot of dead space above the TV, could you maybe add an enclosed shelf a top-opening door? It could be in line with the top most shelf on the left. Could you paint the vent the same colour and finish as the walls to make it blend in?

A round coffee table would work well to pick up on the circular shapes already in the room such as the ceiling roses and even the curves on the new sofa arms. We have a customer that's had these sofa's recently and we went for a scandi style. Perhaps create a bespoke floating unit to fit within the alcove in painted timber, but reuse the drawers as a relatively cheap option whilst still referencing the other items of furniture.

Its a shame we are based in malta, otherwise we could help no problem, our advice is, if you really love the piece, and it matches other furniture, search a local joiner/cabinet maker to make the alterations, you can do a search here on houzz for a professional in your area, or ask family and friends for a recommendation, failing that, check out local directories, good luck and please post a pic of the successful re-make x

Having done exactly that as a job for my wife when she ran Bagpuss Antiques Furniture Restoration, i can tell you that if you were to go down to two drawers, then the job is not as complicated as you many think. Yes, it involves taking the top and bottom away and re-finishing the edges ( hard to tell what the finish is in the pics ), Then re-assembling it and finishing to match. That would have been around the £160-£200 mark. However if you want it custom fitting to go into the alcove without any gaps, then the middle drawer would be the best one to change the size of, that would involve a further £40-60. So, hope that gives you a good idea of price. I still make furniture for customers as we continue to get enquiries as there just aren't many people around doing that sort of thing anymore, however, a carpenter would be able to help you most probably, it's just finishing to match that requires a bit of all round knowledge.
